Originally the idea was that anyone involved would be dead by the time the records were unsealed. So it’s a handy way to make sure everyone escapes justice.
I think with the JFK case there were still a few geezers still around when the date came up, so they started trying to extend it or make excuses not to release the records even after that date.
I don’t think it’s much of a difference if the information
is released after 20 years vs 50.
Unless someone is specifically implicated, then sure you’d
want to cover that up longer.
Once government, the public, society has moved on a couple
of decades, what specifically can be changed?
The follow-on presidents have already served. Most office
holders have moved on.
Lets face it, most of those office holders making the big
plays at the time of the incident, are probably dead for
the most part.
Look at all the important figures from Kennedy’s time.
A number of them were dead by 1983.
