I don’t use any myself, but Dan Bongino recently started up a PayPal competitor Parallel Economy.
I canceled my 20 year old business account on Sunday and am glad to no longer be supporting pink hair San Franciscans.
A few weeks ago, before this mess erupted, I received a bill in the mail from PayPal for $150. It was for an item I’d never heard of, some gamer device, let alone purchased. In fact, I hadn’t use PayPal for several years though I did have an account. I also never carried a PayPal card around, never even had one. I called billing immediately and had them search the source of this fraud. They agreed to that and removed my obligation to them. I then told them to close my account. Period. They also did that, though they keep sending me weird emails about weird stuff.
So how did my account get hacked? And by whom?
To me, it’s clear some inhouse creep was purchasing personal items using member accounts. That’s the only way someone could have known my account info. What a rotten crew.
They have not been beaten up badly enough.
Can’t believe people can be so stupid as to do something like this.
My one experience with PP was 3 years ago when they billed me when I did not even use it. I used my Visa card to order something from EBay and declined PP. The vendor got and processed my complete payment and 5 months later I got a notice from PP that my payment was overdue. They harassed me daily for over a month and threatened my credit score so I said what the hell its only a matter of 45 dollars and sent the check PP specified. PP returned the check and said it could only accept the first monthly payment of 9 dollars and change. I was not permitted to make a full payment of their bogus charge but must pay in monthly installments. I told them to go to hell and the scam went to the bill collector to whom I eventually sent the 22.50 “settlement” demanded. Paypal then 3 months later started all over again and this time I blocked them on my email. There has been no change on my credit score.
There is an absolutely huge money making opportunity here for someone. I keep expecting Visa themselves to step up and establish a clearing house service where you authorize them to make payments as with PP but instead cut out the middle man.
PP is entering the waste bin of business history to join the former “Generals”...and beyond.
Could not have a better outcome. They are toast, they are done, stick a fork in them.
Something had better happen fast though because vendors will suffer. I will not provide credit card to most vendors directly. I’ve had too many numbers lifted and dispersed data such as that leads to increased mischief. Too many data bases with CC information have been hacked. After my data and CC were lost when Titan Equipment’s web site was hacked I said no more direct pay... never.
When I go to a site to make an order and see PayPal anywhere on the page as a requirement or an option or just an advertisement I go elsewhere.
The only thing Coca Cola is good for is to get rid of kidney stones.
If the number of people closing accounts is higher than reported then it is better, not worse.
I would never use a third party payment system and I don’t buy anything on installments o borrow money.
I have that alternative. I use my Visa card and zeroize the balance every time I look it up. I don’t pay interest on anything.
I closed mine too . Discovered they had 20 bucks of mine.
That’s because it has a dumb name.
No, I’m not being a smartass. That is a very bad name for a commercial application that would want to go global.
If you post something they don’t like on FR or FB or IG, they will ‘fine’ you.................. 😒
Elon sold PayPal years ago......................
What PayPal first announced in an updated acceptable use policy, effective Nov. 3, 2022 that, "You may not use the PayPal service for activities that:....." “Involve the sending, posting, or publication of any messages, content, or materials that, in PayPal’s sole discretion, (a) are harmful ... or objectionable … (e) depict, promote, or incite hatred or discrimination of protected groups or of individuals or groups based on protected characteristics (e.g. ... religion, gender or gender identity, sexual orientation, etc.) … (g) .... promote misinformation … or (i) are otherwise unfit for publication.”
Originally the update also stated, "Violation of this Acceptable Use Policy constitutes a violation of the PayPal User Agreement and may subject you to damages, including liquidated damages of $2,500.00 U.S. dollars per violation..."[99] [100]
Obviously, since even posting what the Bible states regarding false gospels as well as illicit sexual unions and effects thereof can be subjectively judged in "PayPal’s sole discretion" as "harmful" or "objectionable" then this policy effectively can work to silence those whom PayPal autocratically judges to be politically objectionable.
PayPal later said that it will not fine $2500 users who engage in “misinformation” or “hatred” against protected identities," and that this language was never intended to be inserted in our policy. [101] but the original may be an act of baring of teeth, warning that such action could follow.
Moreover, what PayPal removed is not fining people for misinformation and changed "activities that.... are harmful ... or objectionable … (e) depict, promote, or incite hatred or discrimination of protected groups or of individuals or groups based on protected characteristics." into "the promotion of hate, violence, racial or other forms of intolerance that is discriminatory." Its the Acceptable Use Policy now states,
Prohibited Activities You may not use the PayPal service for activities that:...relate to transactions involving... (f) the promotion of hate, violence, racial or other forms of intolerance that is discriminatory
Yet, "the promotion of hate, violence, racial or other forms of intolerance that is discriminatory" can translate into what was ambiguously described as activities that:....." “Involve the sending, posting, or publication of any messages, content, or materials that, in PayPal’s sole discretion, (a) are harmful ... or objectionable … (e) depict, promote, or incite hatred or discrimination of protected groups or of individuals or groups based on protected characteristics (e.g. ... religion, gender or gender identity, sexual orientation, etc.) …
And PayPal’s Acceptable Use Policy states.
If you’ve violated our Acceptable Use Policy, then you’re also responsible for damages to PayPal caused by your violation of this policy..You acknowledge and agree that $2,500.00 U.S. dollars per violation of the Acceptable Use Policy is presently a reasonable minimum estimate of PayPal’s actual damages - including, but not limited to, internal administrative costs incurred by PayPal to monitor and track violations, damage to PayPal’s brand and reputation, and penalties imposed upon PayPal by its business partners resulting from a user’s violation - considering all currently existing circumstances, including the relationship of the sum to the range of harm to PayPal that reasonably could be anticipated because, due to the nature of the violations of the Acceptable Use Policy, actual damages would be impractical or extremely difficult to calculate. PayPal may deduct such damages directly from any existing balance in any PayPal account you control.
