The suspected sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines could be a page ripped straight from Vladimir Putin’s playbook of panic, escalation and misdirection.
The former KGB agent’s illegal war on Ukraine resulted in unprecedented Western sanctions against Moscow.
But the Russian president is confident that his people can endure economic pain longer and better than Europeans.
His calculation is that soaring gas prices and the cost of living crisis in a continent hopelessly addicted to Russian energy will turn the situation to his advantage.
European gas prices have been dropping for the last four days. On Tuesday, after news of the suspected attack, they rose by 20 per cent. The British price was up 33 per cent.

Russia has tried to join the EU and was told no.
If Putin goes chances are you’ll get someone worse, not better.
A big opportunity was missed in the 1990’s to make a more peaceful world. Instead the US became more bellicose, Europe more authoritarian and Russia more corrupt.

I would like to remind those who make such statements regarding Russia that our country has different types of weapons as well, and some of them are more modern than the weapons NATO countries have. In the event of a threat to the territorial integrity of our country and to defend Russia and our people, we will certainly make use of all weapon systems available to us. This is not a bluff.
I can’t believe this paper, so let me get this correct! Next week Putin will cut off his nose to spite his face? All Putin had to do was close the valve, now the pipeline needs a slow repair. Only a fool would blow up their pipeline to pressure their customers.....
They were already shut down before this. The Germans refused to certify Nordstrom 2, and the Russians have claimed there were mechanicals difficulties with Nordstream one so they'd shut that down. So both were not in operation, and there was no time table for either of them to be opened.
So there weren't any more cards left for Russia in to play.
