As military setbacks in Ukraine force Russian President Vladimir Putin into a corner, one former CIA officer argues that the chances he might turn to nuclear weapons are increasing.
"I think the chances of his de-escalating are close to zero," Robert Baer, a former CIA case officer, told CNN on Tuesday, adding that Putin "simply cannot give up so much ground and be seen to be losing and continue as leader of Russia."
"The chances of his using nuclear weapons — at least tactical nuclear weapons — is going up by the day," Baer added, referring to smaller nuclear weapons meant for use on the battlefield.

Selective Sabotage; Posobiec with the score!
Well if someone associated with the CIA says it, I know it must be true. /S
This is so unfair. Vlad Putin is getting a bad rap. Same as Pol Pot and Stalin.
Yes, I argued with someone today about this. Russia would just stop sending gas if that were the goal.
Blowing up its own pipeline when that’s the very wealth funding the entire Putin regime?
Makes no sense.
exactly.
Look at it this way, the frontlines in Ukraine are literally thousands of miles long, basically the entire eastern and southern part of the country. So, say Putin uses a tactical nuke on some Ukrainian command center, sure it will destroy the command center and everything else within a mile or two, but it will do absolutely nothing to all the other command centers along the front, besides Putin could have gotten the same result just carpet bombing that single command center with conventional arms.
Then there is the big issue of radiation and fallout, yes Putin has now denied that area to the Ukrainian army, but he has also made it a no-man's land for his own army as well. Not to mention the cloud of fallout that's now blowing toward his own front lines and back into Russia.
So basically, there is zero military reason to use a nuke. The only reason would be to is just the fear factor, showing Ukraine and the west, "Yes, I will use them."
These three pipeline blasts. What is the repair time? 30 days? Perhaps slip a length of “just enough” smaller diameter steel pipe inside the original pipe. Encase all with 12” of rebarred concrete. This would be a quick fix to be upgraded at a future date.
The repair time isn’t the issue.
It’s an escalation and new front. Now infrastructure targets are legitimate targets.
It’s hybrid war. A Kremlin specialty. Putin will just keep making a bigger and bigger mess until he wins. At least that is the plan.
tactical nuke — Prevailing winds blow East towards Russia along with the radioactive dusts. Perhaps Putin uses them on Ukraine on a day when the winds blow West into Europe. Russia could have blown up these two pipes. The Russskies just might have some calculus that it benefits them. They screwed up this Uke invasion, so chalk this down as yet another harebrained action from the Kremlin. (theory)
Oh well, I guess it’s time to surrender then and give Comrade Putin everything he wants, including all the former socialist republics in the Baltic States, the Caucasus and Carpathians, and Central Asia, and also Alaska.
Nope. That was a complete lie.
Nordstream pipeline repair etc. not so crucial for Germany getting Russian gaz————

Sikorski followed that tweet with another criticizing Russia, claiming that the pipelines were unnecessary and only served to give Russian President Vladimir Putin leverage in a potential war in Eastern Europe. While unclear from his tweets, it is appears that the leader’s message of thanks to the U.S. may have been legitimate, given his sharp critique of Russia that followed.
“BTW, there’s no shortage of pipeline capacity for taking gas from Russia to Western Europe, including Germany,” Sikorski added. “Nordstream’s only logic was for Putin to be able to blackmail or wage war on Eastern Europe with impunity. All Ukrainian and Baltic sea states have opposed Nordstream’s construction for 20 years. Now $20 billion of scrap metal lies at the bottom of the sea, another cost to Russia of its criminal decision to invade Ukraine.”
That's one view of reality. Russia just gained four pieces of Ukraine. The good ones. The EU can have the rest.
If he can nuke you, he’s not cornered.
The current exchange rate for the Hrivna/Dollar is about 40/1.
Makes money laundering pretty difficult.
Europe has enough gas for the winter. Putin’s weaponization of energy has failed just as spectacularly as his tampon tourniquet army and he’s escalating. Seems pretty obvious to me.
Look at the map, the Ukie victories a fake. They took me city, andaybe going to take another, except for the Russians it is Korengal and for the Ukies a Somme of sort.
Where are the targets for nukes? There are no high value assets on the battlefield, nuoing cities won’t change anything where the fighting takes place.
