Fox News Spreading Putin's 'Propaganda and Lies,' Liz Cheney Says
Newsweek ^ | Sept 23 2022 | XANDER LANDEN

Representative Liz Cheney, a Wyoming Republican, criticized Fox News Thursday for having retired Army Colonel Douglas Macgregor, who has made controversial comments about Russia's war in Ukraine, on as a guest.

"Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch - Why do you continually put Douglas MacGregor on @FoxNews to spread Putin's propaganda and lies? This is absolutely not in America's interest," Cheney said in a tweet referring to the Murdochs, who control Fox Corporation.

That’s a very apt description!

Cheney is a bigger liar than Putin — and more dangerous because she has a microphone in the USA.

“A lot of posters on Freerepublic stand with Joe Biden and Lis Cheney when it comes to Ukraine and Russia.”

That’s false, and you should be ashamed of yourself.

It’s true there are many FReepers and MAGA conservatives (the smart ones) who rightly see this “stand with Ukraine” bandwagon as just another neocon ploy to get the US involved in another forever war.

That doesn’t mean we are pro Russia or pro Putin.

It’s also true that many of us agree with President Trump that Putin is smart. However evil he is, he should be respected as a worthy adversary, not a bumbling mad man on the verge of collapse. It’s the smart way to view your enemy.

It doesn’t mean we’re pro Russian - it just means supporting the corrupt Ukrainian oligarchs is playing right into Putin’s hands. We are driving Russia into an alliance with China, and at the same time forcing them to capitalize on their energy dominance over Western Europe.

Wars with Russia don’t end well - Trump would not have gotten sucked into this.

Unfortunately, Biden got in and he’s doing what you favor - putting Ukraine first and Americas problems last.

So I imagine you were thrilled with all of Biden's policies before Russia invaded Ukraine. Because he obviously was keeping out illegals, handling Covid right, stopping wokism, etc., perfectly before we started spending money on Ukraine.

Right?

Support for Ukraine against the Russian invasion has nothing to do with all the other ways the Democrats are screwing over the country. They were screwing us over the invasion, and they'd be screwing us over the exact same way if the war ended tomorrow.

The only thing one has to do with the other is that Russian propagandists are trying to link the two so as to isolate Ukraine from western support. It's pure propaganda.

rightly see this “stand with Ukraine” bandwagon as just another neocon ploy to get the US involved in another forever war.

That's a red herring. There is widespread support for helping arm Ukraine. That support rightly would collapse the moment U.S. troops were committed.

You go on defending Biden’s America-last, Ukraine-first agenda. It’s good for Freepers to see that MUGA - make Ukraine great again - has some misguided followers on this site.

As for me, I’ll stick with MAGA. That means I’ll keep opposing you and Biden as you keep sending our tax dollars to Ukraine.

Either you don’t know what a red herring is, or you are mistaking my motives for saying what I said - I’m not trying to mislead or distract anyone - I’m just calling the Ukraine fiasco the way I see it - more neocon warmongering.

US troops or no US troops, it is not unusual for there to be widespread public support for Leftist or neocon warmongering - that didn’t make it a good idea.

This latest warmongering over Putin’s invasion of Ukraine is a perfect storm for warmongering. You have..

1) the usual neocons never seeing a war they didn’t like
2) the Bidens being in bed with Ukrainian oligarchs
3) the Left and RINO neverTrumpers opportunistically trying to leverage off the Trump/Russia hoax by falsely conflating MAGA anti-Ukraine with love of Putin.

MAGA people rightly believe we should be defending our own southern border - not Ukraine’s.. but whenever we make that case, knee-jerk neocons call us Putin lovers…

I called it a red herring because you are deliberately failing to distinguish between supporting Ukraine with armaments, and actual troops on the ground or plains in the air. You are pretending that support for the former necessary implies support for the latter, and that's false.

You've also drawn the false dichotomy between helping Ukraine defend its borders, and our own failure to defend ours. But the two have literally nothing to do with each other. The Biden Administration was not defending our border long before the Ukraine war, and ending support for Ukraine wouldn't change that in the slightest.

The Democrats are, on principle, against securing the southern border regardless of what happens overseas.

I stand by everything I said.

Obviously, sending US troops and sending resources are two different things, but in my opinion, both are ill-advised.

Clearly, you disagree - but instead of supporting your case, you choose to accuse me of red herrings and false dichotomies.

If you want to be taken seriously, just use reason to make your case, rather than doing a lousy job of poking holes in mine.

Okay, here the part of your initial post I quoted, and to which I responded:

rightly see this “stand with Ukraine” bandwagon as just another neocon ploy to get the US involved in another forever war.

You seemed to be rather clearly implying that those of us who support sending Ukraine aid were just trying to get us into a shooting war. You don't think that was unfair?

If you want to be taken seriously, just use reason to make your case, rather than doing a lousy job of poking holes in mine.

My case is twofold. First, I think war in general is sufficiently horrible and destructive, especially when engaged in by major powers, that countries should not be permitted to profit from it. The amount we're spending to help Ukraine eviscerate Russian's military is a drop in the bucket compared to the many trillions we've spent over the last 70 decades on our military. It's probably the best bang for the buck we've ever gotten.

Second, I believe the Chinese are absolutely watching the western response to Russia's aggression, and if they detect weakness or passivity, they'll start the exact same thing in the Pacific. Being the linchpin of western resolve against military adventurism could save us uncounted dollars and lives in discouraging similar aggression by China.

“You don’t think that was unfair?”

Perhaps it is a bit unfair for me to assume I know people’s motives for getting involved with Ukraine. I apologize - and I’ll rephrase:

I don’t think it’s a ploy - I just think it’s another mistake. The kind of foreign entanglement the Founders warned us about.

But you do make a good point about China watching.

My opinion is that the time to draw a line in the sand with China is not when Russia oversteps, but when China oversteps, which they have been doing a lot.

President Trump understood that China was the real threat - and that this Russia hype is a distraction.

When I see the Democrats and other Trump enemies turning up the heat on the anti-Putin rhetoric, it doesn’t reassure me at all that the US is prepared to stand up to a real threat from China. It tells me the opposite, that they want to avoid the subject.

I also believe Trump’s political enemies think they are scoring points by focusing on Putin’s tyranny because they believe their own lies about Trump Russia collusion.

Very soon, China will test our resolve with regard to Taiwan. When that time comes, do you think the Biden administration will be as hawkish about that as they are about Putin? I guarantee they won’t.

Look, Russia is bad, China is bad, Iran is bad. But for the Democrats - who are far more interested in scoring political points against Trump and cutting side deals with oligarchs than they are in protecting US national interests - Putin makes a much better boogie man than China.

I just think if it was really about national interests and national security - we’d be focused elsewhere.
