Hillsborough Co. (Tampa) Zone A mandatory evacuation: Admin is recommending sheltering at least 20 miles inland. Yowser.
So true!
Hernando Co. mandatory evac beginning tomorrow for anyone west of Hwy 19.
Once upon a time (50+ years ago), when I had the idea I could live on a small sailboat moored at Davis Island in Tampa... Along came a hurricane which drove the waters about 3-4 feet OVER the fixed docks. I and several of the slip occupants were invited to use a couple's 44 foot Drift-a-Cruise houseboat as a refuge during the night, while we all went out to tend our lines as the waters rose. I'm still amazed that we had no casualties that night (despite the "Hurricane Party" beverages being consumed!
The only casualties of the night occurred about 3AM when a 38 foot sailboat, which was trying to ride out the storm in the bay, came in for shelter to the marina! They severely damaged a number of craft across from where we were! We would have been glad to help if they were over in our dockage area but..., we just had to watch their mini-horror show from afar! Thankfully there were no fatalities!
About a week later, I moved to an apartment on Davis Blvd and just kept the sailboat for weekends!
That’s us.
Yowser indeed
We’re about 20 miles west of Cocoa Beach…….
That wouldn’t be far enough ‘for me’ if it was coming here!!!
Well, the storm track alleges that the center will pass well west of the Isle of Youth, formerly the Isle of Pines. But looking at the real-time loop, I just don’t see it. Looks like it may hit dead center. Put your experienced eye on it and tell me what you think.

That definitely affects some in my family. Hope they finished boarding up their windows.
Is your area even built back from that bad one a few years back? I remember the Cudjoe Key area where I stayed 20 years ago took a direct hit.
Godspeed!
I think that’s where Irma made landfall in 2017.
When I see the name Isle of Youth, I always think it sounds like the name of a boy band.
It will be very close. Can’t tell what will happen when Ian interacts with Cuba mainland (or is that main island?). Have seen storms slide westward along the southern coast of Cuba.
Sounds like the kind of place for Pedo Joe.
It has been more than a decade, don’t remember. I think it may have been an upgrade offered by the original manufacturer, not an aftermarket thing.
Now look at the 11AM track prediction and see if there’s a difference. I’m thinking there is.
Had a suspicion. Wasn’t sure whether your home is W of Hwy 19. Just heard on local news. Begins tomorrow.
Seems like when you are fortunate enough to have a generator, you have to chain them up so they aren’t easily stolen. They are easy to locate based on how loud they can be.
Old serious built to last masonry is pretty tough stuff.
And thanks, didn’t know about that one, just read up on it a little.
Still not the kind of place I’d want to be in, taking a direct hurricane strike.
My brother owns a trailer in Tarpon Springs. We don’t talk, so I have no idea what he’s doing to prepare.
