Tesla Megapack battery fire spurs shelter-in-place warning in California

A Tesla Megapack battery caught fire this morning at the local utility company PG&E’s Elkhorn Battery Storage facility in Monterey County, California, as reported by local news stations KSBW Action News 8 and KRON4.

Now there’s an alert from Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, North County Fire Protection District, and Pacific Gas & Electric issuing a shelter-in-place advisory for nearby areas, complete with an interactive map showing which areas are affected and road closures.

The fire started at around 1:30AM this morning, according to PG&E’s operations comm manager, Jeff Smith. Smith tells The Verge that PG&E is working with fire and emergency services to provide enough space to safely stop the spread of the fire. As of 1:55PM ET, it appears that the fire is still burning.

Neither.

This isn’t an EV car battery, nor an individual charging station.

This is outside the codes and standards.

The project consists of 256 Tesla MEGAPACK BESS units on 33 concrete slabs for a total of 730MWh capacity.

The are Lithium Ion batteries, which once they go into thermal runaway, cannot be extinguished. It is a solid chemistry exothermic reaction, with flame temps up to 1500deg C. (Melts most stainless steels.)

Outgassing can generate 5 cuft of toxic and highly toxic flammable heavier than air gas per battery cell (say a 3.0 -4.2V x 10Ah battery cell like in your laptop or cellphone).

In these quantities, both the HAZMAT cleanup and evacuation to upwind areas is best policy.

Only thing firefighters can do is use water to disperse heat from adjacent facilities.

See my previous link to the McMicken BESS incident in 2019 outside Phoenix.

Buzzword is NFPA 855, which only allows up to 600kWh / BESS charging system. The MEGAPACK is about 3MW / BESS.

Think of the Hindenburg on steroids.

One of the largest battery packs if not the largest in the world was built in a California structure that previously housed a gas turbine.

Where’s that one?

What I was referring to was the pic you posted compared to the topic of the post- a Tesla Battery Pack fire that caused a shelter in place..

They had a 4 day fire in Australia last year with a Tesla battery pack..

I hope those car fires didn’t last 4 days.

By no means.

Well likewise, "by no means" to your question. My comments on this and similar threads basically express my opinion that it's ridiculous for so many people to take one isolated incident and try to make mountain ranges out of a molehill.

Some folks make it seem as though ICE vehicles are the future. A lot of them are obviously longtime car enthusiasts or truck guys, just like a number of top execs at many ICE automakers. Yet all ICE automakers are now talking more about EVs and some of them are actually starting to produce a couple of EVs. Tesla has a huge lead on all of them given its 20 years of experience designing and manufacturing EVs.

When even the ICE automakers are promising that all their production will be 100% EV by 2035 or 2040 (or whatever) and given the automakers' long lead times, it's obvious EVs are the future, even though some people still like to blow a specific incident here or there all out of proportion.

Rather than "the future", EVs are the abandoned past. Baker Electric had a good run, give them that. 1903 Baker Electric.

“Yet all ICE automakers are now talking more about EVs”

The leaders of ICE Automakers have either been initimidated into expressing this Get Woke Go Broke position and (privately reluctantly) directing scarce R&D funds in that direction, or they are themselves rabid society-killing (sociopathic) deep state/globalist plants.

You're right. As we all know, there's literally no difference between the 1903 Baker Electric and Musk's modern-day Tesla and its sister company SpaceX. Great point! I also agree with your implication that throughout human history, technology never advances. We're all, unfortunately, stuck to the past. Past is prologue.

Yes, I agree with that too. As you say, all ICE automaker CEOs (including all the CEOs of GM, Ford, Chrysler/Jeep or whatever it's now called, Jaguar, BMW, VW, Mercedes, Range Rover, Audi, Hyundai, Toyota, etc.) are all directing their ICE auto company's scarce R&D funds to EVs and are therefore rabid society-killing (sociopathic) deep state/globalist plants.

Most of those CEOs are longtime dedicated career ICE car guys and truck guys who hard-worked their way up the ICE auto company ranks, and yet all of them have somehow been very easily and quickly intimidated and assimilated by the likes of the woke crowd such as the Great and Powerful snowflakes AOC, Pelosi, and Elizabeth Warren. Doesn't say much for all the ICE automakers' CEOs and board of directors (and shareholders). So, if anyone out there still owns any shares in any of those ICE automakers, you have to explain why you still own shares of ICE auto companies being run by "rabid society-killing (sociopathic) deep state/globalist plants."

Call it even: ICEs rule the roost on planet earth, and EVs get to dart around Luna.

Can’t hear the roar of a 440 V-8 on the moon anyway.

No atmosphere to propagate sound waves.

You realize, or do you not? that our biggest, most fundamental societal problem these days is a devastating lack of virtuous masculinity.

How are EVs helping us out on that score? Cause we do need help.

Yikes.
That doesn’t help the climate emergency any..

They just had one in Indiana, like 3 weeks ago, that was going to impact nearby states with some gasoline shortages.

Not sure if Ohio was one of those states but it looks like they have their own issue..

Quite the epidemic..
But Joe’s got us in a good place

Actually, I put the "/s" in there to signify that I was kidding when I said I agree with you and some other freepers who claim EVs are the past and are relegated to the ashbin of history whereas ICE cars are clearly the future.

The "/s" also indicates I was only joking when I said I agree with you that the 1903 Baker Electric is no different than the 2022 Tesla Roadster, that technology never advances, we're stuck to the past, and the past is prologue.

I don't understand the mindset of some who imply that if you win the Nobel Prize in Physics or you're the CEO of a major automaker, you're somehow not tough enough. Too funny: Einstein was a wimp, the Porsche/VW CEO is a total coward, and Isaac Newton went wiggly on us. Then again, maybe that's the idea: Take down Einstein, Newton, Blume and and the rest of the modern-day technological crowd ... and then maybe we can once again finally return to the great Middle Ages.

President Trump called Musk "one of our great geniuses." But then again, maybe the far-left Democrats/RINOs are somehow right that President Trump is a treasonous "liar" and "clown" (the senile Sleepy Joe puppet's word) who should be thrown in jail for life, so we should dismiss everything he says.

Some sights and sounds to retrieve you from EV effeminacy:

EV effeminacy! Wow, years ago, when Tesla first dominated the global EV market, all the 50+ global ICE automaker CEOs should have flooded the global airwaves with the same commercial: "Don't buy Tesla EVs! Don't be effeminate!"

So all those global ICE automaker CEOs must be real dunces. One simple TV ad would have instantly eliminated Tesla as competition. Oh, well, they once had their chance but they unfortunately blew a gasket.

Drop names much? Or are you simply daft?

The Donkey Party is a menacing criminal organization capable of isolating, intimidating, dismantling, criminalizing any given corporate CEO, or any group of CEOs comprising the leadership of any given domestic industry (such as the U.S. auto industry) that runs afoul of it by defying its current industrial policy priorities.

These days, it is presumed that the individuals in question will not be in possession of sufficient moral courage successfully to resist that kind of sustained political/societal/regulatory/criminal prosecutorial pressure.

One guess as to the identity of a particular Bad Orange Man who is in possession of sufficient moral courage for such redistance, and whose ultimate political/criminal/business fate is still very much in question.
