Are you sitting down for this? If not, this bill is for you.
New legislation in Albany is hoping to provide some relief to workers who are on their feet all day. The physically taxing dilemma has deep roots in New York. (And was memorably captured on an episode of "Seinfeld" where George convinces a store to let the security guard sit down… the guard promptly falls sleep, allowing thieves to walk off with merchandise.)
The bill, called the Standing Is Tiring Act — or the SIT Act — has just been introduced in the state Legislature.
If passed, the legislation would require employers to allow employees to sit at work if it doesn't interfere with the nature of the work. The state's Department of Labor would decide who gets to sit and which profession has to stay on its feet.
Assembly member Karines Reyes, a Bronx Democrat, is the bill's sponsor. She says she knows first-hand what being on one's feet all day is like. She has been a registered nurse for several years and said science shows prolonged standing can lead to health problems, injuries, and absenteeism.
"Making accommodations for employees to have that option, to perhaps stand and sit whatever their duties allow them to — I think is fair and humane," Reyes said.
While the bill focuses on the people who are standing all day at work to get them a break because standing too long is bad for their health, sitting for too long can be detrimental to one's health, too.
The bill's sponsors will start the heavy lifting of convincing fellow lawmakers and the governor once they're back in session in January. The bill has been referred to the Labor committee.
But, but, but! https://www.huffpost.com/entry/sitting-is-the-new-smokin_b_5890006
Clearly they are trying to kill people.
I remember watching “The Pacific” the scene with the lieutenant who said, “If you don’t have to run, walk. If you don’t have to walk, stand still. If you don’t have to stand still, sit down. If you don’t have to sit down, lie down. If you don’t have to stay awake, sleep.”
The Canadians had Juno beach all to themselves on D-Day. I imagine those men looked forward to the grave as they saw what happened to the country.
My son out in the field will sit or lie down every chance he gets, usually waiting on me to do something. I’m at the age now where I have to consider how much effort it will take to get back up again!
I hear they originaly wanted to call it "Lazy Office Staff Expect Regular Sitting" bill, until the took a look at the acronym it created.
Learn to code standing up.
A guy in another area ordered a STANDING DESK, it was expensive and he had to have the PO signed off from above.
After a month or two, he did not like it and was the butt of many jokes.
I snatched it up and used/loved it for many years.
Easy to lean on and very comfortable, even eat lunch on it.
Yes.
Even something as dumb as the 'SIT Act'.

What about the 'NAP Act'?
The right to sleep on the job?
Eh?
“She has been a registered nurse for several years and said science shows prolonged standing can lead to health problems, injuries, and absenteeism.”
In reality, science shows that only a lifestyle that involves being on your feet for more than 6 hours a day can really be considered a “non-sedentary” lifestyle, and it is sedentary lifestyles that are the biggest contributor to a whole host of serious health problems and life-threatening conditions.
Funny thing, the standing desks are a hit with cubicle workers.
“What about the ‘NAP Act’?
The right to sleep on the job? “
Nah, I think you’d have more luck calling it the “SIESTA Act” for full diversity bonus points. Just need to find something to fit the acronym.
“Sleeping Is Essential, Saving Tired Americans” Act?
“And there was the movie ‘Wall•e’ where humans had become so inert, they could not get out of their chairs.” [Flick Lives, post 19]
Don’t forget that in the film, the humans on the luxury liner ultimately overcome the robots who have been coddling them and keeping the captive, return to Earth, regain their strength, and re-establish civilization. Of course, the hero and heroine - robots WALL•E and EVE - must first bring those humans the proof that Earth has become habitable again, after all, igniting the spark.
All in all, a more hopeful outcome that whatever the NY State legislature thinks it is up to.

EXCELLENT!!!
You are hired as the chief publicist for our new nationwide grass roots movement!
I'm sure all of the Democrats will support it...
