‘Dark winter’ could bring utilities controlling your thermostat

You thought you turned the thermostat down. In the Texas late summer heat, it keeps getting warmer inside. No matter how much you fiddle with the temperature, you cannot control the climate in your house. When winter comes, those with “smart thermostats” could find themselves without the means to do the same. A combination of smart devices, utility control, unreliable “green” energy, and poor planning will mean a retread of Soviet-style shortages and rationing.

For those who need the energy at the hottest and coldest times of the year, the effects will be critical. And as difficult as this summer was in Texas, the issues will be far worse in energy-strapped blue states. .

Indeed, energy failures are already accelerating while the rise of “smart” technology is often another way of giving away manual control. When a device becomes programmable, don’t always expect that it will be you doing the programming. During a heatwave in Colorado two weeks ago, thousands of utility customers were shut out from using their own thermostats. Around 22,000 customers lost the ability to change their thermostats as the temperatures in their homes ticked up to 88 degrees. Ironically, the customers opted into this loss of autonomy through their energy provider, Xcel, in exchange for a $100 sign-up rebate and $25 per year.

Just replace the thermostat. Tell the electric company to pound sand.

Only if you agree to give the utility control of your thermostat. They can’t just take over any smart device.

Utility companies will soon learn that if they turn down the thermostat, people will just plug in space heaters, or in the neighborhoods where they can’t afford space heaters, they’ll turn on the stove. Attempts to artificially control these things will not only not work, they will just lead to an even more inefficient use of existing resources.

No, it’s the outside meter that they can shut off. The power company changed all meters in our neighborhood years ago to “Smart” meters for this very reason.

So let me get this straight -- this is the second "dark winter" in a row. Is that what I'm hearing from the losers who claim to run this country?

At some point, average people are really going to get fed up with this crap.

Last time I bought a dumb thermostat at Lowes it cost $25. Find out if you have a heat pump so you get the right kne.
Photograph the smart thermostat’s wiring. Look up a video on YouTube and use the same color wiring as directed. Set the thermostat wherever you want it.

Yeah, NVEnergy keeps pushing internet connected thermostats to its customers. Like the vax, we choose not to play.

I won’t do it until they force me to.

In my state, I doubt it will be long before they do that.

And digital currency.

And Electric Cars.

I hope I am dead before this all comes down.

Exactly how do they install a new thermostat? A friend want to know so he can reload the correct ammo.

I was temporarily in a “smart” office where I couldn’t control the temperature beyond a certain range.

I resolved the situation by moving a lamp with an incandescent light bulb and a strategically-placed magazine next to the thermostat.

It’s like the new washing machines that don’t fill the drum as high with water to save water, so people will just do more smaller loads.

Idiots run this country.
