Russia will never give up Crimea and it will continue to defend the Donbas. The Crimea is quite different in one key respect: most of its people, being Russian, prefer to be in Russia. In fact, one can argue that it is in the political interest of Ukrainian nationalists to have Crimea in Russia. Without the votes from Crimea, Viktor Yanukovich would never have been elected president.

this is a huge problem for Russia. the donbass has been attacked by Ukraine possilby nazis since 2014,it reached a level where Russia felt it had to go in along with other issues.hard to say if the other issues have been resolved or not.
Also, Zelensky needs the constant cash flow from the US and anywhere he can get it to keep the laundry open. So, the question is how does it all end? Zelensky basically has no reason to even negotiate with Russia. He does not care how many casualties the Ukrainian people take as long as the laundry and the smuggling ops are going.

the problem is china needs the US for trade. already i know first hand that shipping rates for containers have gone from 25-30k in Jan. to current $8,300 and dropping fast. orders for goods from the US are down in china so they are dropping shipping rates as fast as possible.
They know if they withhold necessary chips from the US it could easily spell fewer orders for them so they have to watch what they do all the time.

In short if Trump were where he should be in the office of the President none of this would have happened.

Putin wrote in July 20121:

"The coup d'état and the subsequent actions of the Kiev authorities inevitably provoked confrontation and civil war. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights estimates that the total number of victims in the conflict in Donbas has exceeded 13,000. Among them are the elderly and children. These are terrible, irreparable losses.

Russia has done everything to stop fratricide. The Minsk agreements aimed at a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Donbas have been concluded. I am convinced that they still have no alternative. In any case, no one has withdrawn their signatures from the Minsk Package of Measures or from the relevant statements by the leaders of the Normandy format countries. No one has initiated a review of the United Nations Security Council resolution of 17 February 2015.

I’ve asked you many times—going back to early May—why Putin just doesn’t keep the Donbas and call it a win? I’ve been advocating this for a while.

I have provided you several times with Russia's four conditions for ending the "special military operation." They are unacceptable to Zelensky and NATO. The have defined winning as taking back Crimea and no territorial concessions. There are reports that the UK killed any peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine in April.

You’ve said Putin had additional goals—a rump-state, landlocked Ukraine, a land bridge to Transdniestria, no NATO promise, Zelenskyy step down, a victory over Europe with sanctions gone and no Russian troop pullout... Or have I misunderstood?

LOL. Since I have not said those things, you misunderstood.

Right now, we are both so intertwined that it would be difficult to decouple. We depend upon China for so many essentials, it would take years to reconstitute a new supply chain.

The historical, linguistic, and culture ties between Russia and Ukraine are hundreds of years old. Putin expressed this feeling of kinship in his lengthy July 2021 article, On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians IMO Putin has not unleashed total warfare on Ukraine for that reason. He could bring Ukraine to its knees by destroying the country's infrastructure, especially the electrical grid. Ukraine and Russia share a 1,500 mile border. They must learn to coexist at some point.

Wow! How many Ukrainians have been directly killed by Russia since this began?

That's neither kinship nor coexistence.

He could bring Ukraine to its knees...

Are you saying he's not trying? Because, so far, he did, but it didn't work. I think we're past the time that Russia has to complete any victory. That's why I've supported a negotiated settlement.

Can the US and NATO stand the embarrassment of failure?

Yes. See last August, Afghanistan edition. It happens.

This war has been going on for eight years. You can't view Russia's second invasion of Ukraine in 2022 in isolation.

Well, yeah. Ask Georgia in 2008, or for that matter Crimea in 2014 and the same year when the Russians started arming separatists in the Donbas.

Finally, I do not view Russia's invasion in isolation, there's always factors. Even Hitler's desire to fix the German problem in Eastern Europe led to Poland. But I clearly think any invasion was wrong.

Look at all the hoops we went through about Iraq from 21 years ago today until April, 2003. And yet still, looking at it back in time, it turned out wrong, for us, Iraq and the peoples of the Middle East.

Do you still support Bush/Powell/Cheney in Iraq? I don't, and it is the same reason I don't support Putin in Ukraine.

I guess the gloves are off starting today. Russia targets Ukraine’s infrastructure, causing blackouts in eastern areas

Widespread power outages were reported Sunday night by Ukrainian media, with the Kharkiv and Donetsk regions completely blacked out, while Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia and Sumy partially lost power, Zelenskyy said.

Yes, information, beyond the cheerleaders from both sides here on Free Republic, is available.

Ukraine’s a mess, due to successive governments, both pro-Russia and pro-West, but the people didn’t deserve to get invaded, blown up, wounded, orphaned, killed and subjugated.

The war could not stop right now if every Ukrainian wished it so, but could stop right now if Putin decided to stop.

After Stalin and Holodomor and now this i doubt the Ukrainians feel much kinship toward the Russians.
Putin was foolish to think the Ukrainians yearned for Slavic brotherhood with them.

Russia has done everything to stop fratricide.

That's a bold statement that is simply not true.

I am convinced that they still have no alternative.

Why, yes they do. They control it now. Like I've been saying, declare victory and stop fighting, except for 100% defense of the territory of Donbas.

You’ve said Putin had additional goals—a rump-state, landlocked Ukraine, a land bridge to Transdniestria, no NATO promise, Zelenskyy step down, a victory over Europe with sanctions gone and no Russian troop pullout... Or have I misunderstood?

I stand corrected. I read it said by many Putin supporters here, repeatedly, but I didn't remember if you gave me a list of these. It's why I asked.

Still those were/are the goals of Russia. They won't be met.

Since I am a racist, sexist, homophobe, please explain why his post broke the rules. There was nothing offensive to me, but then I am not a woman.

There comes a point in time where Stick and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.
It is time to ignore her, she is like the people you still see waring a mask even today.

We were at the 5:00 pm Mass Saturday, and there were about 1-2% of the parishioners who still wore a mask. These are the Karens you cannot reach, no point in acknowledging their B.S.

The most frustrating thing of this entire global event is those here on Free Republic who want to make support for Ukraine equal to support for Biden, Soros, Obama, etc.

Trump supports Ukraine, too, and has condemned Russia’s invasion.

Shannon Bream is as dreadful as I thought she’d be / I wish her well, but this was a horrible start...

This is a non sequitur. If she is dreadful and therefore worthy of out contempt, WHY on earth would we here at FR wish her anything but ruin to her career as soon as possible

We depend upon China for so many essentials,

What an interesting conundrum.
The U.S. issues tons of H1B visas to red dot Indians who speak good English. Many first or second generation Red Dot Indians now run the big IT companies.
India has had a strong alliance with Russia since WWII - purchasing military hardware from the Ruskies.

And now Russia, China AND red dot India are working to create an alternate world currency system along with the Saudis to replace the $.

So in a few years after the coming world depression (possibly paralleling the 1920's Germany or the 1930's U.S) the U.S.A. may very well become something other than a First World Country

Most of this group (I mean those who oppose Ukraine) have been lied to and propagandized their whole lives and aren’t going to take it anymore.

This is the group that, after all the lies about Trump, Russian collusion, Obama’s greatness/American birth, Covid 19, the jab, the so-called science, climate change, transsexuals, gays, being called so-called white supremacists, bitter clingers and deplorables, who are at least fighting back. I do not blame them.

A smaller number are from ex-servicemen who do know war, but think the USA, under the cultural hegemony of the Left, is irredeemable and therefore must be opposed.

Maybe 1% or a handful, irl, are Russia/Chinese disinformation specialists.

I do think things are starting in Ukraine now that will soon lead to a negotiation and end of the war.

Well, the other alternative is we get Trump back in and he exposes and punishes the traitors, while rebuilding America’s manufacturing base, and giving China a taste of his “charm”.

Then we have 8 years of President DeSantis...

I know it’s a long shot, but pray for it with me!
