Alan Moore wrote “V for Vendetta” and he’s a bit of a Left-wing loon. In the graphic novel (and movie) the evil government is nominally Christian and it oppresses homosexuals and Muslims. That’s how you know the government is evil, right? Freedom eventually arrives when those bigots are overthrown.

The specifics of Moore’s politics don’t please me — but his core message seems to be: Sometimes government gets too powerful and that is a bad thing. Don’t let government fuel itself on hate or use oppression of the People as a central mechanism of leadership.

I liked the movie because I think it reflects our current situation. But there are elements which must be looked past.

What’s remarkable is how the left again and again creates fictional works expressing deep fear of a totalitarian future which they then actively bring about through their politics. They expertly project the totalitarian impulse onto others of course but deep down these works seem to express their own knowledge of what they’re capable of. It may be that the left is haunted by dystopian fantasies because they know their own hearts.
