Arizona Republican Senate candidate Blake Masters softened his tone and scrubbed his website's policy page of tough abortion restrictions Thursday as his party reels from the Supreme Court's decision overturning Roe v. Wade.
In an ad posted to Twitter on Thursday, Masters sought to portray his opponent, Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly, as the extremist on the issue while describing his own views as "commonsense."
"Look, I support a ban on very late-term and partial-birth abortion," he said. "And most Americans agree with that. That would just put us on par with other civilized nations." (Late-term abortions are extremely rare, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tracker.)
Just after it released the ad, Masters' campaign published an overhaul of his website and softened his rhetoric, rewriting or erasing five of his six positions. NBC News took screenshots of the website before and after it was changed. Masters' website appeared to have been refreshed after NBC News reached out for clarification about his abortion stances.
"I am 100% pro-life," Masters' website read as of Thursday morning.
That language is now gone.
Another notable deletion: a line that detailed his support for "a federal personhood law (ideally a Constitutional amendment) that recognizes that unborn babies are human beings that may not be killed."

Abortion will be the issue in purple states. Dems will push it hard, almost to the point of getting Trump off their attack screen. It will also be an attack scenario in purple state legislative races to try to get Dem majorities in those legislatures to enact abortion laws
Abortion is not a national issue and not something that the Senate of the United States has to deal with. It’s a states issue and that was the beauty of overturning roe. See how easy the answer is. Kindly send this to every Senator who doesn’t want to get bogged down with media spin.

To win the abortion debate with the public he needs to go 100% towards “my opponent supports aborting full term babies. I don’t.” Get the rats on the defensive when it comes to abortion. No one with a soul supports late term abortion. Evil demon rats support all abortions all the time. But the majority of Americans hate late term abortion

Say whatever you need to say to win. All that matters is how you vote afterward. But if you don’t win who cares what you say?
You’d think this line of attack would work but in the context of U.S. Senatorial campaigns in purple states it tends to not move the needle. Steve Lonegan tried it against Cory Booker in 2013 in a race to fill an empty U.S. senate seat from New Jersey (Senator Lautenberg had died in iffice) but Booker escaped unscathed. Just one data point, but still..

same here in Michigan...Tudor Dixon did an interview with a local reporter, and the guy just carved her up...she fell for the oldest trick, started answering hypotheticals, had her saying all kinds of crazy things on abortion. Whitmer made an ad with it and its on every 20 minutes here...
They asked what i would do. I told them to accuse que ball of supporting holocaust. Then accuse him of supporting the banning of ALL firearms in AZ. Then accuse him of supporting a stazi type government with his support of the build back better and inflation bill. Tell the public how are you going to defend yourself against Kellys stazi after he disarms you.
How are you going to defend yourself with Kellys criminal gangs running loose and his illegal immigrants running loose in the state.
The abortion issue is a minefield for GOP candidates. The Democrats. are revelling in this.
