Republican survivor of Trump-backed primary challenge, represents dying breed in GOP

Newhouse took a different tack, standing by his decision to impeach Trump in January 2021 but largely avoiding the topic as he squeaked through Washington’s top-two primary Aug. 2 along with Democrat Doug White of Yakima.

snip

Newhouse and White advanced with barely a quarter of votes each, enough to leave former gubernatorial candidate Loren Culp in third place with 21% despite Trump’s endorsement of Culp. A bevy of GOP candidates who aligned themselves with the former president, including Culp, split nearly 50% of votes, suggesting Newhouse owes his survival more to a disorganized opposition than to popularity.

Heading into a general election where he will be favored against White in the heavily conservative district, Newhouse may be less worried about winning re-election than about what would face him when a new Congress begins work in January, purged of virtually every Republican who has crossed Trump.

Of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump for inciting the mob that besieged the Capitol and attacked police in an effort to halt the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory, only Rep. David Valadao of California survived the primaries along with Newhouse.

But Valadao, who represents a more moderate district, didn’t have a Trump-endorsed primary challenger and now faces a tough contest against a Democratic state legislator in the general election.

A Valadao loss would make Newhouse even more of an outlier in the House Republican Conference.

Newhouse has a Conservative Review Liberty score of 54%. He's worthless.

I don't usually advocate voting for democrats, but conservatives in this district could rid themselves of Newhouse by voting for White.

I don't think Valadao will survive in California.

“A bevy of GOP candidates who aligned themselves with the former president, including Culp, split nearly 50% of votes, suggesting Newhouse owes his survival more to a disorganized opposition than to popularity. “

Once again, Republicans prove that they are the stupid party. After it became obvious that Culp had the lead amongst MAGA candidates, other MAGA candidates should have dropped out. Newhouse is more an example of the Republicans being the party of collusion.

Unfortunately, too many Republicans in Congress are either stupid or in collusion with Dems or both.

You’re crazy. At least Newhouse didn’t go on TV blabbing about and making it a personalvendetta like Cheney did. Plus he’ll probably vote more conservative and listen to the base more. We need as many seats as we can get.

This article raises more questions than it answers. What stat is this guy in? Is he a deep state RINO? What about the source, who are they?

I disagree. He’ll have NO incentive to vote more conservative. If he wins in November, he will be further incentivized to vote how he wants, having successfully gotten through his primary and then the general, with little comeuppance.

You may be right. We’ll see. But these types don’t often see the light and change. It’s better to be rid of them.

Which could be a good thing.

The state is Washington. Newhouse is a moderate-voting Republican. He has a Conservative Review Liberty score of 54%.

Newhouse is a political zombie. He squeaked by with the votes of squishy GOPe votes and lefty crossovers but Trump voters will not vote for him in the general. It will be a rout.

Bug bye Newhouse.

President Trump should have taken the also-ran-wannabes aside and quietly asked them to withdraw. Typical Republican circular firing squad. Usually the Dems secretly sponsor a "losertarian" screwball to add to chaos.

He likely is a lost cause. Newhouse has been getting MORE liberal as he spends his time in Washington DC rather than Washington state:

Dan Newhouse ACU ratings

Of course he's still better -- probably -- than any Democrat even though his opponent isn't likely to be some nutzoid AOC-clone but, if anything, Newhouse (emboldened by his successful defiance of Trump) is more likely to try to become the next Cheney or Kinzinger and be the new "independent" media darling who opposes conservatives every chance he gets.

I live in Washington state, although not in Newhouse’s district. Our state “Republican” party is not MAGA.

Newhouse won because the Washington state “Republican” party made sure the ACTUAL Republican/Trump vote was split among many candidates. The RINO vote for Newhouse was NOT split, of course, which is the only reason Newhouse beat Trump.

Culp, endorsed by President Trump, was an excellent candidate. If I lived in Newhouse’s district I would NOT vote for him in the general. Given our state “Republican” party leaders, it’s probably the only way to get rid of him.

Oh the FR establishment GOP locust are about to descend upon you and question your loyalty, call you a Democrat among other things. It’s standard establishment liberal GOP 101 playbook. They can vote for the Democrat, withhold money, trash in public or private and stab you in the back if you are a conservative but don’t you dare threaten to withhold your vote from one of their worthless leftist turds on principle you purist. Screw’em! After their behavior with Trump any leftist Bush re-tread that gets beat, the loss is totally on the establishment GOP at this point.
