The Cal State system graduates Black students at lower rates than other groups. Students, scholars and advocates say the reasons are myriad.

Thanks; you’re right. It would be very much worth it.

Correct. The minimum GPA needed for Cal State is 2.0; the minimum GPA needed for UC is 3.0. And if the student “only” has only a 3.0, only UC Merced or Riverside will admit. Applications to UC have DOUBLED since the SAT was dropped so the admit rates are falling to the floor for the other 7 campuses.

Some Cal States like Cal Poly SLO and San Diego reject thousands of 4.0+ yearly though due to very high demand.

Thanks for posting that info; it’s very helpful to hear and I’ll pass it along to my son. There’s no way my son would switch majors; he absolutely loves Computer Science and gets great grades in his CS classes. He’ll get through all the Calc eventually (he’s halfway done!) and then never look back.

Luckily this is the United States and there are always second chances. . .although I’ve warned him there’s only so many times a college will allow Calc attempts. I suspect they will offer many attempts though as his particular campus has had 5 straight years of declining enrollment (too many homeless druggies in his formerly cute college town but that’s another CA issue).

Your Fredrick Douglas quote is just spot on:

I have had but one answer from the beginning. Do nothing with us! Your doing with us has already played the mischief with us. Do nothing with us!

The blacks have a family problem and with it a family discipline problem. That is something only they can solve and many have. But they have a long way to go. What would help: Kill the Affirmative Action Programs and subsidies and stop preaching the idea of black victimhood.

No, it’s more insidious than entitlement mentality.

Lowered Expectations is far far more insidious in my view than entitlement mentality.

The most entitlement mentality person will run into people who will tell them Get Bent, you aren’t entitled to anything during their lives...

Lowered Expectations is far more insidious because it convinces folks who do have natural talent that can be nurtured with work and effort into success that they have actually put in the work to be successful, by telling them they are doing great their entire lives when they are not really putting any real effort in at all.

So you wind up with people who as adults THINK they are putting in great effort and the world rapidly slaps them into reality totally destroying their view of self.

Entitlement minded people know they are lazy, they think they are owed for nothing... lowered expectations folks grow to believe their modest efforts are excellent, and that’s far more dangerous.. because when they finally get into the real world and find out their efforts aren’t remotely as great as they thought they were, the can go very bitter for being sold a false bill of sale rather and decide well I did my best and got nowhere, why bother.. when in fact most never do their best because they were never challenged to do their best.

He arrived at Cal State as a business major, and discovered he was one of only a few Black students in his classes. Math had never been his strong suit, and he failed his introductory statistics class twice.

Someone who doesn't understand basic math should never have been aditted to college in the first place.

“How they made it out of High School ought to be a crime”

I blame it on the “no child left behind” program. That program is responsible, we have “H” Bush to thanks!

Maybe a lot of young folks who are not qualified to go to college are finding themselves lost on a college campus.

The corrupt Educational/Industrial Complex knows THEY (Universities) make just as much money NOT educating a student who can't read, write, or do homework as they can make educating a student who is doing everything possible to to succeed.

So, the greedy 'solution' - ONE that keeps the gravy flowing for Universities - is to call the problem 'racism' and "GIVE THESE 'STUDENTS' PASSING GRADES THE WHOLE FOUR YEARS THEY'RE GETTING LOANS TO PAY THEIR TUITION.

Even better - allow them to get advanced degrees... more money for the school - more sadness for the black students being tricked, and more humiliation for the hard working smart black students who have a right to be proud of their effort without other students snickering. The best solution - the solution with the most dignity - is to treat black students like they treat everyone else.

The public school systems socially promote kids and graduate kids who are not remotely academically prepared for college at all. Then rather than reject students who clearly aren’t up to snuff they let them in and the wash out.

This low expectation stuff is cruel to black students. Cruelest to the capable smart black kids who have to deal with other races snickering about black kid's 'degrees'. That's horrible. Black students should be treated the same as students of all other races. Have the same standards and the same respect for their achievements...

At every level.

Yes...I just finished reading “Created Equal: Clarence Thomas In His Own Words”.

People like her need to read his book. But she and they won’t, because they see him as a “sell out” and an “Uncle Tom” (Their words, not mine)

Their distaste for Justice Thomas is redolent of the same mindset that compels Leftists to idolize the scummy Socialist piece of crap W.E.B. DuBois instead of someone like Booker T. Washington.

Remember the heroic fight to close the academic achievement gap in K-12 schools? Billions of dollars and years wasted to have either exactly the same or statistically insignificant improvements which were probably altered to look good.

When facts were presented at any time such as in the Bell Curve books they were denounced as racist but were still facts. New strategy is to disallow test scores and SAT comparisons since minorities lose on them.

Problem: someday your surgery will be performed by Whoopi Goldberg (Dr.Jill assisting)
or your 747 ride will have Stacey Abrams and Kamala Harris in the cockpit.

Last night on Joel Osteen at Yankee Stadium he told his story of when he was a 4ft tall boy trying to sneak out of a yard where a vicious and huge German shepherd wanted to tear him to pieces.
He couldn’t have usually done it but he took a run at the tall chain link fence, managed to grasp the top with one hand somehow and pulled himself over the top just in time.

Excellent observation ... and very true! My oldest son is an officer in the Coast Guard but has also learned to be an electrician and works about two weekends a month. He works ‘at large’ for 2-3 different contractors and has said that if he could work every weekend, he would make more than his CG pay.

It’s sort of a competency test.

Either you understand what it does and the relative value of it, or you don’t. The basic derivative, integral, and into polar notation. This is the gateway to more advanced concepts such as other coordinate systems, and partial diff EQ’s using them.

More like an IQ test. Either you had the goods to pass it, or you didn’t.

Yeah, no kidding!

Can’t use fuzzy math to get to the moon and back safely, or anywhere else in space.

That’s why we’re going to lose our scientific edge - if we haven’t already.

My uncle was a professor of physics at a California UC, mostly graduate students, but every once in a while he’d have to teach an introductory class. He said the students didn’t know fractions and other basic math. And this is at a UC.

Wrong

Nope. I have no problem with the slaves already there at the signing. They would have gradually been worked in and became Americans. Also, they likely would have been breeded out of existence or had lighter skin tones over time since there wasn't that many of them.

I wrote to one of the authors. Asked him why Black, Latino, Native American and Asian were capitalized, but white was not. Let’s see if they respond.
