Russia Deploys Hypersonic Missiles Along Baltic Sea

Russia has deployed aircraft armed with hypersonic missiles along the Baltic Sea, a move that inches the country's forces closer to its NATO border, The Associated Press reported.

In a Thursday announcement, the Russian Defense Ministry revealed that it moved three MiG-31 fighters brandishing Kinzhal missiles to Chkalovsk air base in Kaliningrad — a Russian enclave north of Poland and south of Lithuania.

Moscow asserts that the Kinzhal missiles, which have already been used in its ongoing invasion of Ukraine, have a range of up to roughly 1,250 miles (2,000 kilometers) and fly at ten times the speed of sound.

Aren’t hypersonic missiles just ICBMs? Unless ramjets are a real thing. Dunno.

Mach 10? Pretty fast! Lots of kinetic damage where it lands.

A hypersonic missile is not an ICBM.

So it’s a missile that travels at 5x the speed of sound without leaving the atmosphere? What is its propulsion and how fast does it achieve hypersonic speed?

Honestly I don’t know.

If they exist, that would be classified.

I keep seeing articles about russia and china relating to hypersonic missiles.

This is media fear mongering.

The US has had hypersonic missiles since the 1960s. The AIM-54C Phoenix missile, used with the F-14 Tomcat, was a mach 5 air-to-air long range radar guided missile. THe Tomcat could aquire 6 enemies on radar and fire on all of them simultaneously, at a range of 150 miles.

Making such a missile into an air-to-ground weapon would have been child’s play to the defense contractors.

If this tech was the game changer that the media seems to think it is, the USSR would have fallen 20 years before it finally did.

Don’t believe the hype.

“Lots of kinetic damage where it lands.”

Hypersonic missiles have very little value unless they are employed against a high value target that is protected against traditional missiles. An aircraft carrier can defend itself against most attacks except against a hypersonic attack. Buildings or field fortifications or even moving field units are of such low value that the expense of a hypersonic vehicle, most of which cost millions of dollars, are not worth such a vehicle.

What we are looking at is a further attempt to ramp up the you are in danger rhetoric. This move has no strategic value.

ICBM is the acronym for Inter Continental Ballistic Missile. It requires about a 12,000 plus mile range and a non powered final portion of the flight.

Hypersonic missiles may have a much shorter range and are generally under power for the entire flight. Some Hypersonics may use Ramjet engines.

In addition to the possible Nuclear Warhead.

The countries up there are talking about blockading St. Petersburg. These missiles will help keep the shipping lanes there open. They’ll only be used if needed.

Right. I’ve never seen a missile travel at mach 5-10 or anything close. Are ramjets a real thing or just experimental.

In other words are hypersonic missiles real or just a new tech fantasy that everybody uses? Like Reagan did with Star Wars.

Used properly, Hypersonic Missiles are a game changer.

What would be the range for a missile to achieve that speed? One would think they’d expend their fuel in a few seconds based on their capacity to carry the fuel.

They moved them to a particular base. Think “Risk”.

Ramjet engines are very real and have been used since WWII.

The one requirement is they must operate within the atmosphere.
