The “per 100K” would vary depending on how the city limits are defined. For example, NYC is a pretty broad spectrum.

Almost all of the top 10 cities on the list are led by Democratic politicians

Heck with it, I looked up the party affiliation of all the mayors of the 31 cities on the list.

The only non-Democrat in the top 10 is the mayor of Rochester, MN, who was a 6-term Dem state rep. previously.

There are only 5 Republican mayors on the list-, all of which are in the twenties:

Lexington, KY (#22) Jacksonville, FL (#23) Colorado Springs, CO (#26) Las Vegas, NV (#27) Virginia Beach, VA (#28)

of note is that the mayor of Las Vegas was a Dem until 2009.

I didn't bother looking up the partisan affiliation of the previous mayors of the cities on the list that are listed as (R), but I have suspicions about a couple...

The Las Vegas Mayor isn’t Republican. Carolyn Goodman and her husband, the previous Mayor, are Independents (more Dem-leaning), though have endorsed some Republicans. LV has not had a GOP Mayor elected since Oran Gregson left office in 1975.

Correlation is not necessarily causation. One reason for the correlation is the (mostly black) citizens who are killing each other, and who vote Democrat, elect Democrats.

It's a bit misleading, really. These ratings depend on cities participating by reporting murder rate statistics... and some don't. For example, Jackson, Mississippi has a higher murder rate than New Orleans - at least for the time being.

The lowest murder rate by ethnicity is from Hindu Americans.
They also have the highest family incomes.
