However, Nixon going to China was an attempt to play China off Russia (remember, he went to China in February, 1972, and followed that up with a trip to Russia in May, 1972). At the time, it made sense.
The only product DC managed to ban from China was Aks, pistols and ammo.

Nixon went to China at the height of the Cold War. He made
some agreements that were very tame compared to what Congress
passed in the early 1990s. The trade we have today is facilitated
those new laws, not Nixon's agreements.

Clinton was in China's hip pocket. He even facilitated missle
tech transfer that helped China's ICBM's to work properly. He did
not give China MFN. Congress did, and they also signed massive
new trade legislation that set up what is taking place with China
today. Clinton was a complete J Off, but he didn't have the mental
faculties to pull of what was done for China. His minions helped to
facilitate it, so that much is on him.
And they did this just a few years after the Tiananmen Square mass
murder.
