KHIMKI, Russia (AP) — A judge in Russia has convicted and sentenced American basketball star Brittney Griner to nine years in prison for drug possession and smuggling.

Judge Anna Sotnikova said the time Griner has served in custody since her arrest in February would count toward the sentence.

Griner reacted to the sentence with little emotion. She listened to the verdict with a blank stare on her face.

While recapping the evidence and giving her findings Thursday, the judge said the 31-year-old Griner illegally brought drugs into Russia.

Agree with those here that say Biden will give up Alaska to get her back. The vocal minority will get their way....again.

Why is Biden under pressure to make a deal? Is it because Griner is a celebrity? The other prisoner, Paul Whelan, has been held for almost four years. He apparently didn’t get considered for a swap until Griner was arrested a few months ago.

If so, then she was pretty stupid for not taking advantage of that opportunity.

People like her don’t think laws anywhere apply to them.

She called Yekaterinburg (in Russia) her "second home."

Well, I guess it's her first home now.

I don't have any fond feelings towards Mr. Bout. Still, there is something unsettling about the US capturing, detaining, prosecuting, and imprisoning foreign nationals who have never been in the United States for violations of US law that didn't occur on US soil.

Aside from that, the US "officially" (and unofficially) provides arms to all sorts of unsavory characters and groups with impunity, but because this guy did it privately, he must be imprisoned. I see it as very hypocritical.

I'd rather see a doctrine that a violation of US law must be committed on US soil to be prosecutable.
