That’s actually the premise of a pretty good book called “Prayers for the Assassin”. The book takes place in 2040. The U.S. has been split into two nations following a nuclear attack and civil war. A moderate Islamic Republic is one of the states. In the story, some people gravitated toward Islam as a solution to the chaos that was unfolding. The other nation is Christian. The book deals with underground attempts to reunite the torn nation. Good read.
