How inevitable is a third consecutive nomination of Donald Trump? Partisan commentators, when it suits their purposes, tend to assume it is so.
Republicans who remain supporters of the 45th president point to data showing he remains popular among his party’s voters. They also recall how loudly heralded attempts to deprive him of his first nomination, in 2016, foundered.
Democrats who regard Trump’s election as an inexplicable black swan event, or even a putsch, have an obvious interest in elevating his chances. So do the cable news channels, which, hungry for ratings, gave him the equivalent of billions of dollars’ worth of free advertising in the spring of 2016.
That interest is illustrated in the poll numbers. For Donald Trump remains unpopular with, if not anathema to, a majority of voters, including many who otherwise regularly vote Republican. That unpopularity is a sledgehammer they can use to attack all Republicans.

Sure a lot of Democrat hacks lobbying for Ron DeSantis.
Trump remains INTENSELY unpopular.... with the media.
It is one of the reasons for the high un favorability ratings among the general populace.... and one of the reasons for the FIERCE loyalty with his base.
We hate the media far worse than the Dem party. Democrats are mostly a bunch of corrupt thugs. The media are the ideological torch bearers.
“For Donald Trump remains unpopular with, if not anathema to, a majority of voters...”
Not necessary to read any further than that preposterous assertion, which came early. I mean, when you are required to build a fake narrative, the lies have to start immediately.
Trump got more votes, even after millions were stolen, than any other president in history.
and so do a number of the Never Trumper Brigade on FR. One of them posts Desantis poll numbers from Newsweek almost every day ;)
Well said.
Wonder if Michael Barone will geve me Saturdays lottery numbers?.
Is a DeSantis win possible? I suppose. Is it likely? No.
“Sure a lot of Democrat hacks lobbying for Ron DeSantis.”
Baroness is ostensibly a republican, but yes Democrats and Republicans who are Democrats sure want to tell us to support DeSantis. Who is not even running
That said, anyone who does not admit that this administration is in through completely illegitimate means is clueless and not worth reading.
Unfortunately, they’re in the same party. Sorry Mikey.
“FIERCE loyalty with his base”
Trumps base is the majority of the voting public and not waning at all.
His base is yuge.
Trump is the number 1 choice by far…
Only if he said he isn’t running would I consider another candidate.
I voted for Trump twice. I plan on voting for him again if he is the nominee. But I am a conservative, not a populist. I am more in favor of my values being victorious than I am of a particular politician. I think that conservative values are more likely to prevail with a candidate who doesn’t have the baggage and incite the amount of vitriol that Trump has. If a more conservative candidate appears to have a better chance of getting elected, I will likely support that candidate.
Actually, you want the Friday numbers for the Mega, if you’re going to ask.
Good luck winning a general election if you lose any of the Trump voters
To those opposed to DeSantis, what bills has Trump passed in the last year and a half?
DeSantis:
* Limiting abortion
* Banning CRT
* Supporting police officers’ relocation to the state
* Preventing vaccine mandates
I thought you were rintintin for a moment.
Yeah sounds good double up is the game.
The opposition would like nothing more than to stir an antagonism between Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump. The two men certainly have different styles, to be sure, but they are in solid agreement on the direction and velocity of the application of a program they both agree to and wholeheartedly support.
It is Trump’s choice to run or not. If he does, DeSantis will defer to Trump’s judgment. If not, then the field is clear and highly encouraging for DeSantis, who would then have a clear lead over most of the rest of the field, if not a commanding majority.
Democrats should kind of keep to their own court and counsel on this one. There is a large (and growing) discontent with the Democrat (or Democrat Socialist) style of governance.
