Trump Smokes Hogan in His Backyard: Former President’s Pick Wins Blowout Primary Against Hogan’s Choice

Maryland Delegate Dan Cox (R-04), who secured former President Donald J. Trump’s highly valuable endorsement, defeated Trump critic Gov. Larry Hogan’s (R-MD) choice as his successor, Kelly Schulz, in Maryland’s Republican gubernatorial primary.

Cox was the only candidate with Trump’s backing in a contest Tuesday night and handily beat out Schulz, who served as secretary of labor, licensing, and regulation and secretary of commerce during different points of Hogan’s administration. Trump endorsed Cox in November, and the race became a microcosm of something much larger happening in the GOP as the America First movement and Republican establishment battle for the soul of the party. With 68 percent reporting at 11:20 p.m., Cox had garnered 56 percent of the vote, trouncing Schulz, who took home 40 percent, the Associated Press election results shared by the New York Times show. The victory signals that conservatives in Maryland are more aligned with Trump than the departing governor.

“Congratulations to Dan Cox. NBC Fake News just called the race, but in this case the reporting wasn’t Fake (for a change!),” he wrote in a subsequent post.

“Dan is MAGA all the way—unlike his opponent, Kelly Schultz, who was handpicked by her ‘boss,’ RINO Larry Hogan, who has been terrible for our Country and is against the America First Movement,” Trump said. “As a State Delegate, Dan stood up to Hogan when he was supporting and meeting with Joe Biden. Dan is for low taxes, school choice, and no more lockdowns.”

After the endorsement, Hogan tweeted that “[p]ersonally, I’d prefer endorsements from people who didn’t lose Maryland by 33 points.”

The victory puts Trump’s endorsement record at 147-10 in 2022, and notably, Trump has been perfect with his picks in 22 other states:

But you know Trump can’t win anything. Uh huh. Has no chance to win the Primary let alone the Presidency. Uh huh again.

MAGA-Republican vs GOPE-Republican vs Vichy Republican

I seems to me that the Maryland Republicans chose wisely.

Congratulations Dan Cox! Now the general is going to be a fight. He’ll need enough votes around the state to overcome Baltimore City and PG County. It will not be easy.

Apparently Governor Hogan's preferences didn't matter!

Maryland is a hell hole communist ridden dump. Full of gimme dats and white guilt ridden boobs. Southern MD is all gummit workers that want to keep their cushy jobs and benefits. Tough state to overturn. Much of MD however is conservative and I’m sure they’ve about had it. Perhaps, as in VA, even some of the libs see what they’ve done after years of voting anti values, American.

I’m afraid this may doom Rs chance at the governorship in a Biden +33 state......
The same way dumping Baker for Diehl in Massachusetts, a Biden +33 state will lose the Rs the state house.

2 governorships flipping from R to D because of bad candidates for their states.

Don’t dampen the euphoria that Trump’s candidate won the primary just because they will most likely lose the actual race! Don’t you know you should be celebrating!?!

Democrats in MD outnumber Republicans by over 1 million, about 55% to 24%. A RINO like Hogan can win statewide on a rare occasion (like when the veto-proof Democrat legislature finds it handy to have an impotent scapegoat as Governor), but when was the last time a conservative won statewide in MD?

It’s hard to tell exactly, but it’s a fairly safe bet that most of us weren’t born yet.

No, the answer is not “Spiro Agnew” — he won because he was known to be somewhat liberal or at least moderate at the time (yes, really) and because he ran to the LEFT of the Democrat in 1966 and because the Rat vote was split due to a liberal Dem candidate who ran as an independent.

I’m glad we’re trying for a miracle in 2022, but it’s going to take one for Cox to prevail.

The RINOs need to go. Yes, there may be a cost in the short term while they're being cleaned but having RINOs put this country in a very bad place.

The RINOs insist that a RINO win is better than a Democrat win but it's shown to be otherwise. A traitor in the ranks is far worse. Liz Cheney is a perfect example.

They are not bad candidates. If, they do lose, it will be those states that suffer.

Either Baker nor Hogan is a Republican. They should just stop pretending.

Looks like Wes Moore is 9 points ahead of Tom Perez with 61% of the votes counted in the Democratic primary.

Moore is carrying all the central counties with Perez ahead in only Montgomery and Fredrick. Franchot is ahead in Eastern Shore and the far west of Maryland.
