Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) says former President Trump will face a lot of competition in a Republican primary if he runs for president in 2024.
McConnell, who usually avoids commenting on the former president, predicted that the 2024 Republican primary won’t be a cakewalk for Trump if he runs again.
“I think we’re going to have a crowded field for president. I assume most of that will unfold later and people will be picking their candidates in a crowded primary field,” he told reporters when asked whether he would oppose Trump or stay neutral in the 2024 Senate Republican primary.
The relationship between Trump and McConnell has been strained since McConnell recognized that Joe Biden was elected president by a vote of the Electoral College in December 2020.
Trump routinely attacks McConnell, often using the nickname “Old Crow” and disparaging his leadership of the Senate Republican Conference.

That’s a good point. Just what do these other candidates disagree with Trump on policy-wise? How will they be able to defend those differences?
Most voters do not study the candidates. They think if the candidate says my policies are the same, they don’t need Trump’s rhetoric. Who could be worse than Joe?
It all depends on Trump. He chooses to continue bringing up 2020 versus his record and plan to get us out of this mess.
Trump doesn’t need any coverage in the primary.
Desantis is NOT going to go up against Trump.
IIRC - he face down 17 last time.
McConnell is a dolt.
THAT would be sweet, to see Mitch retire...and some young patriot who actually loves America and wants to fix the Nation first arise...and take the gavel. That would be music to the ears.
We disagree
What a moron. Hurry up and die Mitch, you commie jerk.
Well Mitch Trump took out (I think) 17 primary candidates in 2015-16. And he’ll destroy anyone in his path in next primary. Just ask your ole pal Jebbie.
Donald will win hands down!
Well, he faced a crowded field in 2016, including all the GOPe favorites including another Bush (remember Jeb!?). Who came out on top then? Take away the cheating, and he can do it again.
I believe there was fraud in 2016, but Trump’s support took them all by surprise and they didn’t have enough fraud baked in to overcome that support. That’s why they colluded together to go all in for 2020. Trump was threatening their gravy train, both right and left. They could not allow that to continue.
The only thing we care about now is WHO counts the ballots and HOW the ballots are counted. Everything else is a moot point Mitchee!
“Considering how much airtime is still devoted to Trump, the Media/democrats/rinos have picked who they want to run against and beat again.”
Lol
Nope....Silly Rabbit.
The American Establishment is maximizing “The Trump Era.”
We get 12 years of Trump instead of 8.
The script is being written, its called ‘The Return of the President’ or ‘Trump’s Revenge.’
If they wanted him gone, you would never hear about him.
“Crowded field” with people like Liz Cheney?
I don’t care if there are a thousand candidates, President Trump will win . Easily.
“If they wanted him gone, you would never hear about him.”
That was my point. The media loves someone they KNOW they can beat. That’s why they pushed for McCain and Romney too.
It won’t be crowded for long Mitch.
There was a crowded field in 2016, and he beat them all while spending far less than some of them.
About 10 Pro Trump Republicans should put themselves on the ticket and not spend any money, so Trump can’t lose.
Trump should run independent. I think he could win.
