Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) says former President Trump will face a lot of competition in a Republican primary if he runs for president in 2024.
McConnell, who usually avoids commenting on the former president, predicted that the 2024 Republican primary won’t be a cakewalk for Trump if he runs again.
“I think we’re going to have a crowded field for president. I assume most of that will unfold later and people will be picking their candidates in a crowded primary field,” he told reporters when asked whether he would oppose Trump or stay neutral in the 2024 Senate Republican primary.
The relationship between Trump and McConnell has been strained since McConnell recognized that Joe Biden was elected president by a vote of the Electoral College in December 2020.
Trump routinely attacks McConnell, often using the nickname “Old Crow” and disparaging his leadership of the Senate Republican Conference.

If the GOP were smart, they’d clear the decks for Trump (or DeSantis in the unlikely event Trump doesn’t run), but “the stupid party” would rather form a circular firing squad to help the dems.

And Trump will win with the opposition split and enjoying a majority of the popular vote anyway.
Mitch is right, there will be quite a number of third tier candidates announcing for 2024 but the second tier, like Abbott and DeSantis will sit this one out. The third stringers will get their names in there for some campaign cash from the never-trumpers and the name recognition with an eye toward 2028. Not certain who Trump would pick for VP but that person would have a leg up for 2028 when I think the odds will favor DeSantis unless he seriously challenges Trump in 2024. His laugh pad for 2028 is based in Florida, not Washington.
Who would be your choice to replace McConnell as speaker? Perhaps keep it in Ky with Rand Paul? Get someone in there with guts!

Aside from a couple real flakes and idiots, I can’t see anyone running against such a popular party leader as pdjt. Possibly the governor of Florida but my guess is he will go for the Veep job this time around
