UK: Indian origin former minister Rishi Sunak bids to replace PM Boris Johnson

British former finance minister Rishi Sunak has announced he is running to replace Boris Johnson, three days after helping to launch the cascade of resignations that brought the prime minister down.

Johnson announced on Thursday that he would stand down as prime minister after a mass rebellion in his Conservative Party, triggered by the latest in a series of scandals that had fatally undermined public trust.

"Someone has to grip this moment and make the right decisions. That’s why I’m standing to be the next leader of the Conservative Party and your prime minister,” Sunak said in a video posted on Twitter

"Do we confront this moment with honesty seriousness and determination or do we tell ourselves comforting fairy tales that might make us feel better in the moment but will leave our children worse off tomorrow,” he said

Rishi Sunak's grandparents came from Punjab. He has two daughters with Akshata Murty, the daughter of Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy. They met while they were students in California.

In the video, the 49-year-old MP shares the story of his grandmother who boarded a plane to England as a young woman "armed with hope for a better life".

"She managed to find a job. But it took nearly a year to save enough money for her husband and children to follow her," Rishi Sunak said in the video.

Why is it a travesty for a person whose grandparents were Indian, to become prime minister?

Rishi sunak was born in the UK and his parents weren’t Indian citizens.

The fact that he is ethnically punjabi is no different than that Benjamin Disraeli was ethnically Jewish yet was a great British prime minister.

What open conflict in punjab?

There are 3 Punjabs

The province of Punjab in Pakistan. No conflict there.

The state of Punjab in India, majority Sikh. The khalistan issue is only in Canada.

The state of haryana in India, majority Hindu.

What open conflict do you mean?

Many ethnic Indian workers were expelled from Kenya and Tanzania in the mid-late 1960’s and went to England.

Thx for that.

Also worth noting that Muslims are well represented in government leadership in the UK.

Were it not for the Brits, India would be totally backward like Africa

If you'd care to just google, India was very rich till the British pillaged her out of $45 Trillion in todays money. Besides killing millions of Indians in artificial famines caused by the diversion of Indian grown grain to Britain and Europe.

Most of the modern mathematical knowledge was known to ancient Indians long before the Europeans came to know of it via Arab traders.

And the poor governance of the first 65 years after Independence was essentially caused by Indian pols who craved the acceptance of liberals in the West rather than do what Indians needed done.

That’s because you don’t read any books before commenting. The British went to India to trade primarily because India was very rich. Until 1810 it was 20 to 25% of the world’s GDP
