Japan's former PM Shinzo Abe assassinated

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has died after being shot on Friday, the hospital treating him has confirmed.

Abe, Japan's longest-serving leader, was 67. Doctors said he died at 5:03 p.m. Japan time.

Abe was shot at about 11:30 a.m. while delivering a street speech in the western city of Nara ahead of Sunday's upper house election.

He was rushed to Nara Medical University Hospital by helicopter, arriving at 12:20 p.m. in a state of cardiac arrest. A doctor at the hospital told reporters that Abe had two gunshot wounds to the neck, with one "reaching to the heart." No bullets were found in his body, the doctor said. The hospital tried to stop the bleeding and administered blood transfusions, but the doctor said Abe "died of blood loss."

After Abe's death was confirmed, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters that he was "truly sorry" and had "no words."

"Prime Minister Abe held the heavy responsibility of prime minister of Japan, guiding the country in a difficult domestic and international situation with his outstanding leadership and ability to execute," Kishida said.

The Nara Prefectural Police arrested a 41-year-old man, identified as local resident Tetsuya Yamagami, at the scene. Video footage showed officers tackling the man, and what appeared to be a weapon on the pavement. Japanese news agency Kyodo was reporting that the suspected gunman is a former member of Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force.

Officials from Abe's Liberal Democratic Party said the former prime minister was attacked from behind, and initially that the weapon seemed to be a shotgun. Police later told public broadcaster NHK that it was a handmade gun.

Check out his wiki page someday . His father - another big politco - volunteered for the Kamikaze , but the war ended before his training was over . If it hadn’t ended , Shinzo would never have been born . His grandfather was a war criminal but let go from Sugamo prison . His maternal grandad also involved bigtime in WW2 .

Necessity is the Mother of Invention, soon there will be weapons that will make guns the least of our worries.

Dirty bombs or other weapons of mass destruction.

Was the longest serving PM in Japanese history. Gave up position in 2012 due to serious digestive issues Then won election again serving until 2020 when he again gave up position for same reason. An arch conservative Felt country needed to change constitution due to threats from N. Korea and China.

Abe, who left office in 2020, was still a lower house lawmaker and leader of the biggest faction in the ruling party, making him one of the country's most influential politicians.

Abe was still a major player in the ruling LDP party. He was not an ex-politician in the same way as US ex-Presidents.

Abe lied to the world about Fukushima, and a lot of American and Japanese military went into the radioactive hell hole and were exposed. Lots of these people now have Leukemia and rare cancers. My theory is that this guy had Leukemaia and was going to die soon. He blamed Abe for it.

Regardless, he will swing for his crime.

In Japan, it's not a drop long enough for a quick somewhat dignified death by broken neck.

It's a slow humiliating dangle and strangle.

Felt country needed to change constitution due to threats from N. Korea and China.

MOM the three components of a murder. Motive. Opportunity. Means.

Fat Boy and Little Xi have the motive.

Just sayin'...

Makes sense. Sound was also more of a cannon/muzzle load (slow burn) than compared to the crack of a modern firearm

Replace “prime minister” with president and I think you could get an understanding.

Parliamentary system. He’s still a very influential legislator. Think of a president becoming Senate or House majority leader after leaving office.

I didn’t like him too much when I was there (he was wishy-washy about foreigners in Japan, but wanted as many out as possible before the 2020 Olympics), but I would never wish this (nor ill will on him).

Yes, I had pointed that out originally that the smoke cloud was well bigger than any modern firearm I’d seen.

“Homemade” gun? One more reason why gun control is silly.
