Was the longest serving PM in Japanese history. Gave up position in 2012 due to serious digestive issues Then won election again serving until 2020 when he again gave up position for same reason. An arch conservative Felt country needed to change constitution due to threats from N. Korea and China.

Abe, who left office in 2020, was still a lower house lawmaker and leader of the biggest faction in the ruling party, making him one of the country's most influential politicians.

Abe was still a major player in the ruling LDP party. He was not an ex-politician in the same way as US ex-Presidents.
