A deadly threat facing Australia’s bees has expanded, with more properties affected. The infestation could cost Australia $70m a year.
The threat to Australia’s honey bees has expanded after a deadly parasite was discovered at more NSW properties. Bees are being exterminated in NSW to stop the spread of the varroa mite parasite, which could cost Australia $70m each year if it is not stopped.
On Tuesday, authorities revealed there were now seven infested properties discovered through contract tracing.
A Department of Primary Industries (DPI) emergency order has banned the movement of bees throughout the state, with some hives to be eradicated.
And on Tuesday it was revealed another biosecurity zone would be set up after an infested premises was found at Bulahdelah on the Mid North Coast, outside the existing zones.
“This means a new 10km eradication zone, 25km for surveillance and an extended 50km biosecurity zone have been implemented, to rapidly shut down that new incursion and stop further spread,” Agriculture Minister Dugald Saunders said.
“Critically, this case is directly linked to a previously identified property, which shows the prompt and efficient response by the Department of Primary Industries is working well.”
The other two new cases identified on Tuesday were at Newcastle and at Seaham.

Nobody has ever recommend exterminating all nearby hives to control the spread.
This is another fake crisis to limit food production and control the HUMAN population.
So how did they get the bees to agree to contract tracing.
People are going to have to start and rely on their own abilities to grow food and get away from corporate farming.
Yep. Did bees for 14 years (on ‘sabbatical now’). All beekeepers have to deal with varroa (and to a lesser extent, trachea mites). Formic acid, bee strains, mite traps, monitoring via sugar rolls, apistan, apiguard, mite-away... and on and on.
The only reason to highlight this is for political distraction, fear creation, control.

I lost several hives to varroa mites thirty years ago. The bees survive with the mites in the warm weather of the south, but not in the cold winters of the North.
Used several treatments, including menthol crystals and it helped.
By putting a handful of bees in a quart mason jar, along with some spray ether starting fluid and then shaking the jar, the bees would throw up the mites and you could see the varroa mites in the jar.
Yes. Mites have been a bee parasite forever. Its nothing new. All beekeepers are aware of it.

It looks like Ausies are taking drastic measures to eradicate the mites before they spread all around.
That’s actually make sense. Mites can be controlled, but is is a lot better if they are not around at all. Killing all the bees in 10 km radius is not that big a deal.

During her mating flight she can mate with 50-60 drones and thus be able to pass on dna from lots of different males during her lifetime of laying eggs. To me, bee colonies are miraculous. I am awed by the complexity.
My understanding is that honey never goes bad.

Yeah, the used to bury the pharaohs with food. Well they found a chuck of honeycomb and the honey was still good.
