I was a mere slip of a girl, aged 12, when Roe v. Wade became The Law of the Land.
My Mom cried. She sat me down and told me in NO UNCERTAIN TERMS that if I ever got pregnant when I was older, and wasn’t going to get married, that we would raise that baby as our own. No questions, no shame, no nothing.
Turned out I couldn’t have kids, but it was nice to know in that whole mess, which was pretty much ALL of the 1970’s, which side of the fence my own Mother was on! :)
“Turned out I couldn’t have kids, but it was nice to know in that whole mess, which was pretty much ALL of the 1970’s, which side of the fence my own Mother was on! :)”
My wife got pregnant with twins late in life (45) after we had tried unsuccessfully for years prior. Her OB asked her if she wanted an amniocentesis to determine their health and viability. Her response was “why, I am having them regardless of what it would show”. Was never closer with her than at that moment.
My Mom sat me down and said pretty much the same thing!
She said “IF you get pregnant, you will NOT get an abortion, and WE together would raise the baby.”
Turns out, I couldn’t have babies either!
I got chills when I read your post!
Hi,
I was a ten year-old girl when the decision came down. Just two years prior, my mom had most of her kids help protest against abortion somewhere in Los Angeles. I remember I was eight years old in 1971 and carried a sign that said “Abortion Kills Babies”.
I never thought I would see this day... Thank you God!
