Russia warns NATO-member Lithuania over Kaliningrad transit

LONDON, June 20 (Reuters) - Russia warned NATO member Lithuania on Monday that unless the transit of goods to Russia's Kaliningrad exclave on the Baltic Sea was swiftly restored then Moscow would take undisclosed measures to defend its national interests.

With east-west relations at a half-century low over Russia's Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine, Vilnius banned the transit of goods sanctioned by the European Union through Lithuanian territory to and from the exclave, citing EU sanction rules.

Russia's foreign ministry summoned Lithuania's top envoy in Moscow to deliver a protest while the Kremlin said the situation was beyond serious.

"The situation is more than serious," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters. "This decision is really unprecedented. It's a violation of everything."

Russia's foreign ministry demanded Vilnius reverse what it cast as an "openly hostile" move immediately.

"If cargo transit between the Kaliningrad region and the rest of the Russian Federation via Lithuania is not fully restored in the near future, then Russia reserves the right to take actions to protect its national interests," it said.

Sanctions brought about by Russian invasion of Ukraine.

So, Russia brought this on. Leave Ukraine. Problem solved.

What are our responsibilities in Iraq and Afghanistan?

You could make a case for attacking Afghanistan because that is where the 9/11 hijackers were trained and harbored.

We were sold about the WMDs in Iraq which turned out to be not true.

Yes, exactly.

And this cartoon -- from Global Times -- says it all

They can un-pervert themselves without invading Ukraine.
They can go to heaven or hell domestically, as they choose, and the world wouldnt care.
Putin can turn Russia into North Korea, if he likes, with our sincere indifference.

“So Russia invaded Ukraine to stave off globohomo ?”

The idiocy on FR has skyrocketed in recent years. Didn’t used to be like this. A lot of it has to do with proliferating clickbait blogs that have become sources for everything from medicine to politics to war.

We are very weak right now, and Russia and China are getting much stronger.

Yes, with every passing day, Russia's military strength grows!

All of the "weak" or "inferior" Russian soldiers are being killed, and all of the "defective" Russian materiel is being destroyed - leaving only the "strongest" and "finest" to endure! It's Darwin's "survival of the fittest" in actual practice! If it continues much longer, Russia's army will soon be made up of nothing but supermen!

Regards,

The problem is that the insane Bidet administration is not “indifferent” about anything.

They want to make the world safe for perverts.

Putin knows it.

I would think the last 21 years of perpetual warfare would be enough.

Well, as we learned on 9/11, sometimes war comes to you. The enemy also gets a vote, and our failures in Iraq and Afghanistan have only encouraged them. So the 21 years of war have, in fact, made new wars much more likely.

IMO, we have no idea what Russia has or doesn’t have, the amount of propaganda being written about Ukraine and Russia is off the charts.

I have no idea who will eventually win the war in Ukraine, one day it will be over and then we will know which side was telling the truth, until then anyone offering opinions on the war is merely repeating propaganda.

Nah, thats not it.

They dont care. Russia is a society of whores, at the top, and is for sale top to bottom. They KNOW what they are. Moscow is no less perverted than Paris.

All this is a cynical propaganda line designed to leverage western culture wars. Some amazing fools take them at their word.

“Without question this is a deliberate provocation and casus belli.”

Balderdash.

If Russia can turn the gas taps down or even off to European countries on a whim without that constituting an Article 5 provocation or a causus belli for a declaration of war, EU member states can enforce sanctions against Russia without these cretinous, excessively theatrical baby like tantrums.

Russia is acting like a pathetic spoilt brat who can dish out a beating but goes crying to mommy playing the victim when someone slaps them back.

This bear needs more than a poling. It badly, BADLY, needs to be taken to the woodshed for a darned good thrashing that’s long overdue.

Maybe it looks that way from Olympus, but not here on Earth.

The simple fact is that Russia invaded Ukraine for a second time without a casus belli and failed to take over the whole country and is now trying to hold onto what it succeeded in grabbing so far.

We hanged men at Nuremberg for doing this.

Bidet decided to sanction Russia.

He and the Con-gress own it.

All of it.

Putin has said he is fighting a war against Western pervert values—you can choose not to believe him if you wish.

I do not. For one, he has also clearly stated that he does not consider Ukraine as a legitimate county, that it is properly a part of Russia. Also, an invasion of Ukraine is neither necessary or conductive to protect Russia from Western pervert values. Both Poland and Hungary are doing so through their own laws. Russia could do likewise. This claim is just a rehash of old Soviet claims, as well as of those of Nazi Germany, to justify Russia's aggression.

What written obligation is there for Lithuania to permit transit of Russian vehicles over it’s border. Got a link?

“It isn’t an act of war to not let another nation transit your country by ground. Plus, Russia always has the option to get into and out of Kaliningrad...”

Yup. It’s word fir word the solution Putin puts for Ukrainian grain exports.

Reasonable when he proposes it, outrageous if someone else does. What a f***ing child Putin is.
