“Aw, Malleus Maleficarum, (Latin: “Hammer of Witches”) It was written by Catholic clergyman Heinrich Kramer (under his Latinized name Henricus Institor) and first published in the German city of Speyer in 1486. The Malleus Maleficarum asserts that three elements were necessary for witchcraft: the evil intentions of the witch, the appearance of the pentagram and the effort to tie witchcraft to satanism, and the permission of God.

“...the evil intentions of the witch...”

I know a couple of witches, and not wiccans, and they are far from evil. Leave it to the Catholic church to demonize everything so they can ride in on their white horses and save the day. Just look at today’s church intervention on abortion and divorce and you’ll see some real questionable thoughts.

“...the appearance of the pentagram and the effort to tie witchcraft to satanism”

The Pentagram pre-dates Christianity (and Satonic studies) and actually stands for the five points of “Man,” that is head, two arms, two legs. It is also a symbol of the Great Elements of Life—Earth, Air, Fire and Water plus the fifth element, Spirit.

“and the permission of God.”

Historical examinations of the subject of Witchcraft would reveal it to be a peaceful, Goddess-worshiping, nature religion. During the Dark Ages, the church persecuted anyone who was not a Christian, as “heathens.” Historically, the Gods of the conquered become the Devils of the conquerors. This is where the connection between Witchcraft and Satanism came from, and amazingly persists even to this modern time.

“I’ll let your imagination run wild on how the elixir was applied.”

I fortunately know how it was applied and you’re right, this is not the atmosphere to describe it.

I am not a practitioner of witchcraft, but I understand the actions of the Catholic church and the misuse of information from people like I mentioned and others to include most Hollywood writers, Antwon McVey, and the misguided brutality in Scotland, Ireland, and England along side a lot of Europe finally reaching Salem. I am a member of another group that was attacked by the church unwarrantedly and is still shunned today. So I have a small understanding of what happened.

If you are a horse lover you have already watched “Fury! The story of a horse and the boy who loves him.”

Joey Clark, a troubled youngster, is adopted by Jim Newton, the owner of the Broken Wheel Ranch in California and forms a strong bond with a wild horse named Fury.

Episodes on the web.

I don’t know any witches(that I know of) but my reading of this book, along with “Atlas Shrugged”, “One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisov”,”Helter Skelter” “1984” among others made me cautious of handing power over the individual, whether by state or private actors.

Unfortunately I’ve lived long enough to see some of these times come to life.

There is a great deal of debate among the Pagan community about whether or not Wicca is truly the same form of Witchcraft that the ancients practiced.

There ought to be no debate.

We have somewhat good primary source material for Greece and Italy--including a few ritual texts like the Iguvine Tables--but very little for other areas, like the Celtic countries. The lack of sources makes it conveniently easy to make up a practice and claim it was "ancient." Or to take an old medieval Christian practice and pretend it was pagan. Like "All Hallows Eve".

Wicca is a 19th century creation that has essentially nothing to do with ancient paganism.

Historical examinations of the subject of Witchcraft would reveal it to be a peaceful, Goddess-worshiping, nature religion. During the Dark Ages, the church persecuted anyone who was not a Christian, as “heathens.”

Penalties for heresy and apostasy against the state religion go back to pagan times. Socrates was sentenced to death for "failing to acknowledge the gods that the city acknowledges". The Christians in Rome were put to death for not offering pinches of incense to the Emperor or Minerva.

And the Catholic Church didn't need to "demonize" paganism because it was full of demons already. Wiccans naively like to paint this rosy picture of ancient paganism, but it could be very savage, and very brutal. Human sacrifice was common worldwide. Right here in North America even--just look what happened at Mound 72 in Cahokia. Gladiatorial combat was an Etruscan/Roman religious ritual. And just look up what the Romans did to a Vestal Virgin who violated her vows.

If Wiccans would drop their attempt to connect themselves with ancient paganism, they maybe could make the case that they got rid of all that ancient bloodlust and were just a peaceful nature religion.

But it'd still be baloney, because like all pagans, they still call on spirits to do favors for them. And these spirits don't work cheap.

I don’t recall any episode of Bewitched that involved riding a broomstick.

But when you consider Hillary, that’s a different matter.

One “artifact” of Bewitched is how the characters would reflexively get a drink whenever disturbed or upset. Apply the “drinking game” to that, Endora popping in and Samantha saying “My stars” you’ll be passed out in no time.

“And the Catholic Church didn’t need to “demonize” paganism because it was full of demons already.”

Demonize is defined as portraying as wicked and threatening. So they threatened the pagans and that is considered any different than what they considered being done?

A state religion (also called an established religion or official religion) is a religion or creed officially endorsed by a sovereign state. A state with an official religion (also known as confessional state), while not secular, is not necessarily a theocracy. State religions are official or government-sanctioned establishments of a religion, but the state does not need to be under the control of the religion (as in a theocracy) nor is the state-sanctioned religion necessarily under the control of the state.

The Roman Empire was a primarily polytheistic civilization, which meant that people recognized and worshiped multiple gods and goddesses. Despite the presence of monotheistic religions within the empire, such as Judaism and early Christianity, Romans honored multiple deities. So paganism and Catholicism were both in attendance. But the Catholic church controlled the Vatican and had their own army.

The Church had long been a feudal landholder and was thus able to generate armed force in the same way as other feudal lordships: either by summoning vassals to provide obligatory military service or by accepting payment in lieu of service and hiring paid troops. This was advanced into the colonies and to the west coast. In 1819, the U.S. Congress passed the Civilization Fund Act, which allowed the president to enact policy that would “civilize” Native Americans. This was a part of America’s plan to expand westward and shrink the Native population.

After having pushed Native Americans as westward as they could after the 1830 Indian Removal Act, residential schools became one of the main ways America tried to get rid of Indigenous people. There were fund financed churches to create schools to teach Native American children Christian American culture, replacing their Native cultures. The fund paid missionaries and church leaders to partner with the federal government to establish schools in Indian territories to teach Native children to replace tribal practices with Christian practices.

So, even as late as the 1800’s. who was demonizing who?

Completely agree.

“The lack of sources makes it conveniently easy to make up a practice and claim it was “ancient.” Or to take an old medieval Christian practice and pretend it was pagan. Like ‘All Hallows Eve’.”

When the Romans conquered the Celts in the 1st century CE, they added their own festivals of Feralia, commemorating the passing of the dead, and of Pomona, the goddess of the harvest. So the acceptance of Gods and Goddesses was a kind of group grope, with a wink, also.

It’s how you assimilate the “conquered society” into the Greater Roman Co-Prosperity Sphere!

Feralia was in February. The Harvest festival...is...well...a harvest festival. If there is solid evidence that they were incorporated into Samhain I certainly don’t know it.

And of course the very name “All Hallows” is pure Germanic, not Celtic, so it points more to the Anglo-Saxon tribes than the Welsh or Irish.

“If there is solid evidence that they were incorporated into Samhain I certainly don’t know it.”

Feralia was held on February 21 and celebrated the Roman manes or spirits of the dead. (Roman tombstones don’t read Requiescat in Pace or RIP but rather D.M. standing for Dis Manibus, “for the spirits of the dead”.)

The Feralia was the last day of the Parentalia festival to honor one’s ancestors, when people would bring offerings to their deceased ancestors’ tombs. The Lemuria was celebrated on three days — May 9, 11, and 13 because even days were considered unlucky. It was also a festival for the dead, but honored the lemures, or the more dangerous spirits of people who died violent or untimely deaths. Both holidays were not around Hallow’s Eve, but were very like it in that it was a celebration of the dead.

The pagan festivals of Samhain among the Celts and Lemuria among the Romans were eventually coopted by the Catholic church. In 609 AD, Pope Boniface IV rededicated the Roman Pantheon — the temple to all gods — to Christian martyrs and made May 13, the final day of Lemuria, the feast day of All Martyrs. More than two centuries later, Pope Gregory IV expanded the festival to include saints as well and moved it to November 1. Eventually, the new Christian festival supplanted the Celtic Samhain held on the same day. November 1 became All Saints Day and November 2 became All Souls Day, with All Hallow’s Eve preceding them and incorporating many of the traditions of Samhain.
