‘I don’t do straw polls’: Ron DeSantis deflects 2024 buzz

Gov. Ron DeSantis is downplaying recent straw polls showing him as a leading presidential prospect in 2024.

DeSantis has outperformed former President Donald Trump in a number of such informal surveys at various events in recent weeks, a phenomenon leading to an increasing amount of stories on the seeming trend.

As he has done when asked about a desire to run for President in 2024, DeSantis sidestepped the question.

“I don’t do straw polls. They just put my name into these things, you know? It’s just, like, so what am I supposed to do? Like they sell merchandise and everything. I kind of would like to get royalties on that,” DeSantis quipped Wednesday in Fort Myers Beach.

DeSantis continues to demonstrate a national reach with the most passionate partisans in the party as a potential alternative to the former President.

“The only thing standing between DeSantis and the White House is Trump. And DeSantis is smart enough to not poke that bear.”

DeSantis is strengthening GOP in Florida. Key state in election.

Another Desantis term will fortify Florida. DeSantis can wait till 2028.

Many of us love Trump, and are thankful for his Presidency. We just feel that it is critical to win the 2024 election, and we feel DeSantis is our best chance to WIN. The stakes are very high - if we lose, we will probably never recover.

DeSantis could quite easily do what some others have done, and said that he would not run in 2024 if Trump does.

I would be surprised if he didn't run at this point, and he's probably got my vote if he does.

I love Trump but not most of his hiring decisions, not his plarforming of Fauci and scarf lady, not his boosting of boosters.

I’d be fine with Desantis- Trump ticket. Let VP Trump go out and rally the base with tweets and rallies. Meanwhile, President Desantis makes the hiring decisions and does the actual governing.

If he doesn’t win reelection, none of this is going to matter

Trump doesn’t do second fiddle to anyone. Either he’s running it or he’s not involved.

Hahah, No one can see Trump as anyone’s VP. That’s what leadership looks like.

Ok. Trump did this wrong and then he did that wrong and then he did another thing wrong.

DeSantis is going to never do that amount of things wrong.

Let’s turn on trump. Got it.

Got it.

Well turn on trump and expect DeSantis to be perfect and effective. And he’s not even running. Ok.

“T rump doesn’t do second fiddle to anyone”

For his first two years (when GOP controlled Congress) he did second fiddle to Paul Ryan and Mitch. He let them do their agenda - corporate tax cuts - instead of forcing them to do his (a wall and infrastructure).

There’s a lot I feel in there. Conservatives don’t really talk that way.

It would be nice if we could take the best parts of Trump and DeSantis and combine them, but I don’t think either of the two is interested in playing second fiddle to anybody. I love DeSantis for his position on domestic issue, but would like to hear his position on foreign policy matters. If he’s a neocon, well that would totally disqualify him in my book. Many of Trumps picks turned out to be terrible, hope he leaned something from that experience. The ‘rats are doing everything they can to try and disqualify Trump from even running, worried they won’t be able to get away with stealing the election again.

I suspect if asked Trump would say he was in charge of the whole show.

Which Trump hire or appointee is your favorite? Wray? Barr? MATTIS? Bolton? Fauci? Scarf lady? Pence?

Or DeSantis as long as he can be governor.

Yea, easy to forget what Trump has sacrificed for the country. Most of these other political pukes became rich as a result of being in politics. Trump is objectively worst off because he saw what was happening to the country before most people and tried to stop it. Someone pointed it out already but Trump was a fan favorite among just about everyone in the culture. The media changed that by lying about him and just trying to destroy his life and his families lives. The fact that he’s still viable at all, to me, is more evidence that he is the right man at this time.

Which is your favorite from whom he should choose. Let me know one decent appointee wasn’t dragged into trouble.

If he were to run in 2024 against Trump he would be making a huge political mistake. That would leave a bitter taste in the mouths of Trump supporters who would otherwise support him if Trump decided not to run. He’s waiting for 2028 when it should be his nomination for the taking plus he would get another four years to be governor in a must win state for any Republican in a presidential election. Those four years he could spend strengthening his voting base and organization in Florida for the 2028 run.

Picture him after 2 successful terms. No riding out into the sunset. A mini-Trump hovering over all primaries, giving MAGA speeches, RINO hunting until he’s Trump’s age. A 30+ year project. Think Johnny Carson, Bill Belichick.

Stick around long enough not to get stale or fall like the J. Edgars, Joe Paternos.

“ If he were to run in 2024 against Trump he would be making a huge political mistake”

You mean like when Reagan ran against President Ford and was never heard from again after he lost?

The Country is probably well past its prime regardless who the President is. Trump largely had the country moving in the right direction but just about every institution and, probably more importantly, the culture has rotted away for decades and that kind of lasting decay isn’t going to be turned around by a President.
