They are living in such self-delusion. Trump’s policies are not only wildly popular among Republicans, they are also vastly expanding the base.
The difference between a deep state conservative and deep state liberal used to be that deep state conservatives wanted to advance the deep state and a slightly slower pace than deep state Democrats. That distinction is now getting awfully blurry.
