Murphy rules out assault weapons ban, new background checks in Senate plan

WASHINGTON — Sen. Chris Murphy, who is helping lead Senate talks on gun control, said lawmakers don’t plan to bring any bill to the floor that would ban assault weapons or include comprehensive background checks but are actively working on legislation that would include a range of other measures.

“We’re not going to put a piece of legislation on the table that’s going to ban assault weapons, or we’re not going to pass comprehensive background checks,” Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union." “But right now, people in this country want us to make progress. They just don’t want the status quo to continue for another 30 years.”

Among the items currently on the table are investments in mental health care and school safety, red flag laws and changes to strengthen the background check system, said Murphy.

Lawmakers have been meeting regularly to try to hammer out a deal, and Murphy expressed optimism that the two parties could strike an accord.

I’m happy about this development.

Harden the schools. Stop with the psychiatric work that does nothing about a violent patient.

I can't imagine much that professional politicans and Swamp Creatures can come up with that won't result in numerous valid legal challenges, and referral to SCOTUS

They're out of runway for any of their usual tricks. The only valid options are kook control and hardening up school security but they run from those like the plague.

I think the problem is people don’t want to get involved anymore with the crazies. Probably get sued. They think it is not their problem and it will probably just go away.

Democrat internal polling numbers are far worse than the economy.

They are looking at setting a record for the largest number of House and Senate seats lost by the party in power during the midterms with vote percentages far exceeding the margin of error cheating.

Raise the age to 21 to purchase a gun?

Fine, raise the age to 21 to vote.

Voting is much more dangerous in the hands of an 18 year old than a gun!

Sounds like Romney and Linda are refusing to play kissy face with the RATS.
That would be a first.

It won't wore because it was not meant to work. They do not want it to work. They will pass feel good laws that will have no effect. And won't be adhered to. Schools will continue to be shot up at their whim. The CIA and FBI have an endless supply of fools for that end. All they have to is inject them with bug juice, outfit them, and point them in the right direction. This will continue until the public at large demands that the Government takes control of the guns. A/L/A, England and Australia. They do not want to pass laws banning possession of guns because that will lead to shooting when the Police have to go from door to door. They prefer the public voluntarily turn them in as happened in England and Australia. If you don't believe it will happen, look what they did with Covid 19. They had people killing other people not wearing a mask to stop the spread of Covid 19. A mask that had plainly printed on the box in large letters Not for Medical use in the English Language. All they have todo is tell their PsyOPS guys what they want and in a few days they will have it. Then those who comply will drop a dime on those who do not comply. Just like Covid 19./p>

Completely nonviolent conservative positions are willfully mislabeled violent hate speech by leftists.

I bet they compromise and “all” agree on new red flag laws. No one can argue with that, right? A mentally ill person shouldn’t have access to guns because they might shoot someone.

Now, who decides if someone is mentally ill or a danger to others? Rabid anti-gun judges, doctors, teachers, etc? Maybe your neighbor who sees you load your gun cases in the car to go to the range? Owning a gun will be enough of a reason to declare someone a danger if you ask some people.

....the marxist democrats in the senate, probably with the help of a couple marxist RINOS, will pass some feel good, self loathing bill that, in REALITY doesn’t do a damn thing to prevent another Uvalde.

Only a REAL MAN about 6’ tall and 200lbs walking the halls with a Glock on each hip and a documented history of being in the midst of hot lead flying is going to make a difference when the NEXT Uvalde shooter opens up. Another FEEL GOOD Democratic Party law WILL NOT change that dynamic one iota.

Otherwise, we will just see 19 cowards in the hall and 19 dead babies in the classroom........... AGAIN!

They absolutely need to remove service-related PTSD for military/former military from any red flag laws.

Without that exemption all this will do is stifle veterans getting proper help.

Background checks? They must mean the kind that failed to identify Hunter Biden as a drug addict in 2018 despite being discharged from the U.S. Navy Reserve (his corrupt political appointment) in 2014 for cocaine abuse.

They’ll ban pistol grips, and flash suppressors as they did in 1994. So, we’ll see the return of thumb hold stocks.

This is something I can agree on. It has been shown that in 1955 there were about 350 beds in mental wards per hundred thousand population.
Today there are 12 beds per hundred thousand. The rest are out running on the streets causing problems.

So called "Universal" background checks are utterly unenforceable as every state that has tried has discovered. Assuming you "sell" a gun and the buyer pays cash, and no receipts are created, there is absolutely no way for the government to prove a transaction took place or even if a transaction occurred before of after the law changed. Which is why prosecutions in states that have this law have been virtually nill.

In fact, I think democrats understand this clearly. This is Trojan Horse for Universal Registration, they will magically "discover" that hordes of gun owners are ignoring the background check law and then say the only solution is to force all guns to be registered so they will know who owns what and can track when a gun is sold.
