Nevada says it will end investment in companies that make assault-style weapons

Nevada state Treasurer Zach Conine announced Thursday the state will end its investments in businesses that sell or manufacture assault-style weapons in the wake of a string of deadly mass shootings nationwide.

“Today, I directed our team to divest the State of Nevada from any investment in a business that profits from the sale or manufacture of assault-style weapons,” Conine wrote. “No one policy or law will fix this crisis, but we all must do something.”

Conine said that his decision was particularly influenced by the shooting that took place in Uvalde, Texas, last week resulting in the deaths of 19 fourth-graders and their two teachers.

An 18-year-old who obtained multiple weapons on and just after his birthday killed the children and their teachers after shooting his grandmother and stealing her car, authorities said.

“Companies that profit on the manufacture and sale of assault-style weapons present a market risk I’m not willing to take,” Conine said.

He added, “The moral risk for investing in these companies is too high and is more than we are willing to bear.”

Conine said he was the father of young children and that his decision to divest was dedicated to keeping children safe and preventing the grief experienced by parents and grandparents who lost children in Uvalde and in other instances of gun violence. The shooting in Uvalde was preceded by a racially-motivated attack on a supermarket in a heavily Black area of Buffalo, N.Y., earlier last month that killed 10 people, intensifying debates surrounding gun control and gun violence prevention across the country.

Nevada faced its own tragedy in 2017 when Stephen Paddock opened fire on a Las Vegas music festival, killing 58 people and injuring hundreds.

Paddock legally owned dozens of assault-style firearms.

The proper response would be to not sell any weapons or ammunition to the State of Nevada or county within the state.

All this virtue signaling does is tell the loons that up till now they have been any investing in businesses that profit from the sale or manufacture of assault-style weapons.

That can't sit well with Beto and friends.

National Guard is federally-funded/equipped for all weapon systems from individual arms right on up the chain. SWAT and police often receive federal grants for equipment that are usually dependent on some level of fund matching from the state/city.

How about not investing in alcohol distilleries, breweries, tobacco companies, car companies, and any other company that can kill thousands every year.

I used to have a mini-14 but I sold it. Ruger mags are too expensive. You can get an AR-15 mag for $11 here. I’m definitely stocking up.

LOL I had a Mini-30. This is the 7.62 version of the mini-14.

“Wood” stock. But I ended up adding a flash suppressor and other stuff and I swear people thought I had a new rifle. This was back in the 90s before it was fashionable to talk about assault weapons but still.

If they get one firearm banned, the barn door is wide open to every firearm.

Where does state and local law enforcement buy their weapons?

Gee, kinda like a Ruger 10/22? Same bullet diameter (.22, although quite a bit less powder behind it), magazine fed semi-auto? Wood stock? So if I put a black plastic stock on a 10/22, does it become an assault weapon?
The only worse word choice is “weapon of war.” My uncle has a rifle actually used in a war over his fireplace. .55 caliber.
Could have even killed someone, who knows. Its properly a “weapon of war,” even though it is a Kentucky flintlock.

But that’s a Russian 7.62 I think, correct? Which is a good round, I admit. Better than 5.56

Ten rounders? 😂 Someone I know bought some Ruger mags a long time ago when they were less costly.

well, this week they are saying an “assault weapon” is center fire only.

Those Ruger mags were going for 40-50 bucks back when I sold mine.

So then those companies will stop sell them to law enforcement in Nevada.

Actually, the Mini-14 is the small version of the 7.62 M-14 (hence ‘mini’).

Just redesign weapons to look like they just came right off the set of powerpuff girls or my little pony so that they don’t give off that scary assaulty feel and rename them to HS-15 for Huggy Squeezy. Problem solved.
