A US woman has fatally shot a man who opened fire on a crowd of people with a semi-automatic rifle in Charleston, West Virginia.
Dennis Butler, a 37-year-old with an extensive criminal history, was killed after he targeted a group of around 40 people attending a birthday party.
Police spokesman Tony Hazelett said the woman's quick reaction saved lives and may have prevented a mass shooting.
It comes amid a national debate over guns after a school shooting in Texas.
Butler had driven by the area earlier on Wednesday evening when he was warned to slow down because children were playing.
He returned armed with an AR-15-type rifle and opened fire from his vehicle on the birthday-graduation party outside the apartment complex in the city.
Mr Hazelett told a news conference that the woman who fired back did not have any law enforcement background. She has not been identified.
"She's just a member of the community who was carrying her weapon lawfully," he said. "And instead of running from the threat she engaged with the threat and saved several lives."
The woman remained at the scene after the shooting, and is co-operating with investigators.
Charges will not be filed against her, police added.
Butler was found dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds, police said.
Mr Hazelett said it is not yet clear how Butler obtained the weapon - which he was not legally allowed to carry as a convicted felon.

There’s a reason you rarely if ever hear about robberies at pawn shops or gun stores.....employees at both types of businesses usually open carry and criminals know it.
The answer is not less guns....it’s MORE....in the right places a lot of this BS could be mitigated.....just my 2 cent.
When guns are outlawed, FELONS will still have theirs and they’ll feel safe because good guys won’t have guns...

I’ve been told that in my state, the Soviet of Washington, women make up a very large percentage of new gun buyers and CCW holders. We’ve had multiple high profile attempted rapes and a couple of rapes and assaults all by the mental drug vagrants that infect this area.
All the women except 2 in my family are CCW holders and the 2 that aren’t carrying still can shoot the eyes out of a fly at 100 yards. I made damn sure my 4 daughters were firearms experts before they were teenagers, the oldest is 50ish now. They taught my grandkids how to use guns and now my grandkids are training my great grandkids. As it should be…

These good-guys-with-guns stories need to carpet all news outlets every week. They get little or no coverage because it doesn’t fit the lib narrative, but that has to stop.

Your point is one that the anti-gun lobby regularly ignores. In the same way that heroin and other drugs are readily available, even though possession and/or sale is a crime, so too illegal guns will always be available for criminals. As I see it, if the law abiding population is disarmed, the crime rate will increase, not decrease, since the thugs with the guns will have no fear of being shot as they rape, rob and pillage. But, rest assured, the elites will be protected.
Democrats have managed to turn the debate to how guns are killing people, and making more laws to take guns away from people.
People are not paying attention to the real reason for the 2nd amendment or the right to bear arms. When people get shot, TV and radio and internet discussions, are immediately about how guns should be outlawed or made almost impossible to get/own.
The same people who want to ban guns are the same who want to limit or take away our first amendment rights, or freedom of speech. Democrats and people who think like them, want to control people’s lives, and taking away the freedom of speech is just one step, and taking away the right to bear arms is the icing on the cake towards control of the people. A people without their constitutional rights and without their bill-pf-rights, are easily controlled and forced to obey governments that are not working for the good of the people.
Perhaps just once, the debate should be about WHY the second amendment exists, and it’s not primarily so that people can defend themselves against crooks or mentally disturbed neighbors.

Fifty two years ago the NRA magazine AMERICAN RIFLEMAN was criticized for having short news items of citizens who protected themselves with firearms.
The American Rifleman editors pointed out that all those stories came from American Newspapers.
The NRA magazines still carry such stories in their magazines.
