In wake of the Texas school shooting there are some who question if School Resource police officers make schools safer?
Schools in Tompkins County don't have SROs and law enforcement says they have received pushback in the past to have the presence of officers in schools.
A member of the Common Council of the City of Ithaca says he has pushed back on officers in schools because he adamantly opposes it.
Jorge DeFendini is the Alderperson who represents ward 4 of the Common Council of Ithaca. He believes an increased presence of police at schools or even having SROs in schools is a bad idea. He spoke out against it in a tweet on Tuesday.
"I condemn and denounce the decision to increase police presence at schools in light of recent event or at any other times. Police were present at the Texas shooting and it did not stop the tragedy it never does." Defendini said!
He says it's treating the symptoms and putting a bandaid on a gunshot wound right now, as opposed to treating the root of the problem.
"In reality, the problems that we are dealing with are problems of over access, easy access to military-grade weaponry and in access to mental health resources and other factors that cause poverty. We need to talk about getting guns things off the streets while also making sure our communities are funded and well resourced so that people have access to food and medicine health care and support and a broader sense of community so people don't feel left alone and socially isolated that's how we stop these things from happening," DeFendini said.
There were proposals made to the Ithaca City School District in the past for SROs. DeFendini says if there's a new push for SROs he's going to keep his stance.
"If I have to be honest I have to say what reality are you living, just honestly because it didn't, people died I man at what point where do we draw the line here are we going to have tanks guarding schools are we going to have armed officers with rifles in every school," DeFendini said.
Tompkins County Sheriff, Derek Osborne says his top priority is keeping the community safe. And explained his decision to increase Deputy's presence and patrols at schools was to put students, faculty, and parents at ease and make them feel a little safer.
City of Evil bump
“...are we going to have armed officers with rifles in every school”
You can START by taking those ridiculous “Gun Free Zone” signs down. You may as well have a “Come On In and Start Shootin” sign.
There is no political gain.
Good night all schools have to do is lock the damn doors, hire some competent SRO’s and you’re done.
But those activities serve no purpose to the ambulance or herse chasing Dem who wants to stir up shit.
Our local school budget is 190 MILLION, yes MILLION. One would think they could put a storage unit at the front gate housed with tactical gear, battering rams, key cards, vests, shields etc for a few hundred grand and have it checked monthly for condition.
Train cops and swat to show up, get geared up, and enter the building in 2-3 minutes.
Law enforcement was NOT present inside the school in Uvalde. There is a big difference between responding to a call with a shooter already inside and being inside when the shooter arrives.
Sounds like DeFendini is seeking a socialist utopia. There are a number good prospects for him to establish a new home elsewhere.
Just look around, sir. Just look around.
“..other factors that cause poverty”
Well, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold came from well to do, upper middle class surroundings. And the 9/11 perps drove around in Mercedes cars in addition to paying for expensive flight school lessons.
If it doesn't stop it, it can definitely mitigate the damage if the police are responsive. Sol are armed teachers and staff. Just having that sign out front that says "Our Staff Are Armed" is a huge deterrent.
“We have to set aside our differences and put politics behind us, and then immediately enact every wet dream of the progressive radical left.”
They weren't police, they were social workers. We don't have real police anymore because their hands are tied, elected officials don't back them, and they are not protected from frivolous lawsuits.
“Gun Free Zone” signs actually are welcome signs to any nutcase. If bad people can read, they already know no one in here will have a gun or other weapon but them. It does not have to be a gun; could be a rock or other weapon of choice.
On the surface, having an armed officer in schools is a great idea. However, now in two high profile incidences we have seen the officer RUN AWAY AND HIDE or be told to WAIT 30-90 minutes before entering the school. The idea is good, just need Competent folks to implement.
Yup, the police were outside battling the parents from trying to go inside to save their children.
Yep.
Root cause.
People vote for idiots like DeFendini.
Ithaca is New York, not America
I’m pretty sure the Buffalo shooter was middle class or upper middle class as well.
I never see guns just laying around in the street for just anyone to pick up.
There’s no problems with guns on the streets.
There are problems with LE which won’t act. Of course police aren’t going to do anything when they are either ordered to stand down or are cowards.
You’d think there’d be at least one man somewhere who had the manhood to say the hell with orders, I’m saving lives. If he was facing disciplinary action for doing something that saved many lives, all hell would break loose from the public against the powers that be who refuse to allow the police we are paying for for protection to do their jobs.
How those men can sleep at night is beyond me.
He is partly correct (by accident).
Police or armed guards is a BAD idea. Who you gonna get? The FAT, OLD, useless officers who will be too busy chatting up some staffer to be ready to protect students, if they are even capable of doing so.
“Shooter in the auditorium, drop the donut and waddle on down there.”
ARM THE SCHOOL STAFF! (or volunteer armed citizens)
