The war crimes in Mariupol were committed by the Azov regiment and Ukrainian nationalists, who used civilians as human shields and killed those that tried to escape.
There are plenty of videos of interviews with civilians that have said so.

Maybe 5000 of them went paramilitary.

Best estimates (from the DPR itself, not the MSM) reckon on maybe 150 civilians killed in 2019. The UN figures are lower.
For 2020 and 2021 the UN counted less than 26. In each entire year.
I don’t know about you but if I was told a country really had tens of thousands of active Russian hating mass killers rampaging round Donbass committing a genocide I’d expect to hear about more than 25 body bags (and, I’d expect them to actually be Russians killed in direct fighting. Actually about half of them weren’t killed that way at all. Some were Ukes killed by landmine accidents.)
Ask the DPR how many Russians were killed in 2020 and 2021. If there’s a genocide they should have a bit more than 2 dozen dead Russian civilians, definitely murdered in cold blood.
Oddly, they won’t even publish an estimate.
A cynic might think the UN stats and the DPR stats both pointed to the genocide ending in 2019 and for some reason I can’t put my finger on, Putin and Lavrov lied incessantly to make it out to be an ongoing genocide.

Well, using that logic, the Ukrainians could have saved every dead or wounded Ukrainian by surrendering on February 24th.
AND, a lot of the invading Russians would still be alive.
War is HELL. Its all Bad—there are no war crimes because War is a Crime! Yes, lots of folks died—horrible, yes, but the age of Chivalry has long ended. All are targets. What we did in the Tokyo fire bombings was terrible—but we won. What the Russians did in Mariupol was also terrible—but they won. No moralizing here—get the war over with—STOP THE KILLING—NOW. So what if a border changes? It happens—Ask any Tibetan?
