Henry Kissinger warns against the defeat of Russia as Western unity on sanctions frays badly

Veteran US statesman Henry Kissinger has urged the West to stop trying to inflict a crushing defeat on Russian forces in Ukraine, warning that it would have disastrous consequences for the long term stability of Europe.

The former US Secretary of State and architect of the Cold War rapprochement between the US and China told a gathering in Davos that it would be fatal for the West by the mood of the moment, forgetting the proper place of Russia in the European balance of power.

Dr Kissinger said the war must not be allowed to drag on for much longer, and came close to calling on the West to bully Ukraine into accepting negotiations on terms that fall very far short of its current war aims.

“Negotiations need to begin in the next two months before it creates upheavals and tensions that will not be easily overcome. Ideally, the dividing line should be a return to the status quo ante. Pursuing the war beyond that point would not be about the freedom of Ukraine, but a new war against Russia itself,” he said.

I don’t care much for Kissinger, but he is correct here. Even at 90+ he still retains much more commonsense than the idiots currently in the White House.

He is right for a change. This war never should have happened. JFK would’ve gone to Cuba had USSR not backed down. Why Biden forced this on Putin is anyone’s guess

Well that was unexpected.

Kissinger must be immortal. I remember him pontificating like when I was a kid, and he was old back then.

"Pursuing the war beyond that point would not be about the freedom of Ukraine, but a new war against Russia itself,” he said."

He's saying the quiet part out loud.

In Kissinger's case, I think he is giving the Davos bunch a warning. Not that I'm a Kissinger fan, his motives are at times suspect..

But I wonder if he is indirectly saying "you pursue such a war, and it will bring you and what you're attempting to do (a new feudalism, imho) down.

I just looked it up - he's 98.
I didn't realize he was still kicking.

Kissinger also realizes that this could easily lead to the dissolution of the EU. The economic fallout from boycotting Russia’s oil & gas would be devastating to all of their economies.

I’m not a big fan of Henry Kissinger. But like Mel Brooks, Kissinger is one of the few WW II vets still with us. I’ll respect him for that, and say no more.

It would make an interesting movie script to see how the world would change if Davos was vaporized by an H-bomb.
