Australian voters have delivered a sharp rebuke to the center-right government, ending nine years of conservative rule, in favor of the center-left opposition that promised stronger action on climate change.
Australian Labor Party leader Anthony Albanese appeared certain to form a minority government, though it was unclear as counting continued if the party would have enough seats for a majority, according to projections from three news networks.
Parties need a majority of 76 seats to form a majority government. Labor is currently sitting on around 70, according to the Australian Electoral Commission. Early counting showed a strong swing towards Greens candidates and Independents who demanded emissions cuts far above the commitments made by Morrison's coalition.
Amanda McKenzie, CEO of the research group the Climate Council, declared climate action the winner of the vote. "Millions of Australians have put climate first. Now, it's time for a radical reset on how this great nation of ours acts upon the climate challenge," she said in a statement.

We talk about fake news, we carry signs about fake news, we laugh about fake news, and then CNN writes a take on the election that relies on only an envirowack source to propagandize that Aussies didn’t vote against COVID lockdowns and insanity but for climate tax, and the plurality of FR commentators nod sagely.
Seriously? Even one of us took this as vaguely truthful? Now the Labor may give Aussies climate change hell but that’s definitely not what they voted *for*.
So glad I never followed through on emigrating during the Carter years.
Yes, you have the good sense to use paper ballots, and goodonya. I was surprised you have compulsory voter registration and that registered voters are required to vote or face fines. Wow.
Here, it seems better if those who do not care about politics, keep up with the issues, know or care much about the candidates not vote an ignorant coin-flipping vote (or one based on liking one candidate’s looks or sound of his name, color of his tie better or whatever). Maybe you don’t have such people in Australia? I am not being critical, just curious.
> “... so what am I missing?”
Odor of CNN.
“Morrison and the other Conservatives did it to themselves, they ran and governed like a Bush Republican,”
They governed like Erich Honecker of East Germany. Nationwide prison lockdown. Forbidding foreign nationals from leaving. Covid concentration camps. Mandatory death shots. Unbelievable police state tactics. Also they were enthusiastic participants in the 2016 Five Eyes plot against Trump.
I’m glad he was voted out, it’s hard to imagine anyone could be worse. They are not conservative by any means.
I lived there for 25 years.
No machines. You are handed a ballot that you mark with a pencil/pen and then drop into a locked ballot box as you exit. When the polls close, observers from each party watch as the ballot box is unlocked and the votes are counted.
All sorts of voters here. But you have to vote. And you have to prove who you are. Voting by mail is tightly controled. If you don’t like any politicians and have a ‘ pox on all their houses’ you mark your ballot any old way, even write ‘get stuffed!’ on it or whatever. Your vote won’t be counted as a legit vote, but you will still get marked off the voting roll as having voted. The U.S leaves voting procedural matters up to the individual states of the Union. But here it is a federal controlled thing via an electoral commission which is non partisan, effective and no scandals. We have an electoral process that is very good.
“They just kissed thier industry and agriculture good bye...”
The utterly tyrannical covid government did that. I’m glad they lost. All covid tyrants must go!
“...in favor of the center-left opposition that promised stronger action on climate change.”
Good, have fun with that sh!t, morons.
So the idiotic voters got their vengeance on the Aussie version of the RINOs because of the strict lockdowns and elected a leftist Labor/Green coalition.
You're going to find out what REAL tyranny is when the monkeypox vaxx and lockdown chickens come home to roost.
“Western society’s freedoms are doomed.”
The “conservative” Aussie government has been strangling those freedoms for the last 2 years. They also tried to strangle them here too, pushing for TPP and undermining Trump.
Screw em if that is a “conservative”.
Thank you for the reply. That makes sense. I’ve been tempted to write in “none of the above” some elections (we can ask for write-in ballots and vote for anyone we choose —some people vote for Mickey Mouse or some such as a protest vote). But I held my nose and voted for the one perceived as the lesser of two evils.
Holding my nose and voting for John “Never Saw A War I Didn’t Like” McCain was an awful experience. You know him, liked to pose for photos with his ISIS terrorist “freedom fighter” buddies, all gung ho to turn Libya into a failed state, bomb bomb bomb Serbia (against the NATO and UN Charters) and on and on. Obama was worse, but still hard to crank that goofy voting machine wheel thing for McCain.
I’m glad you have such an excellent electoral system and process. How I wish we would use paper ballots and clean up our electoral system and laws.
I just chatted with an Aussie friend, Anthony Albanese is Australia’s Joe Biden, they’re screwed.
They’re going to be sorry they did that.
The good old days, eh
How much of the vote was against the insane lockdowns of the last couple years?
I have to wonder how much backlash came not from the imaginary climate solutions and instead came from Australians who were upset about the huge disruptions the lockdowns caused, including excluding them from independent international trade and tourism for so long...
You made my point, Morrison governed like a Labor Lite politician.
The guy who won will cozy up to China, probably cancel the AUKUS deal where the USA and UK transferred nuclear submarine technology to Australia and go 100% green new deal.
Yes, it can and will get much worse for Australia.
'Greenslide' in Oz Dumps Scott Morrison.
From the link:
...judging by the overall election result, the weight of the voting population across all age groups has become delusional. A cultural degeneration, perhaps already in waiting, has been given impetus by "climate change" and Covid. Irony. Australia is one of the few countries to meet its Kyoto commitment. It has a covid death-rate one tenth that of the U.S. Unemployment has just fallen to 3.9 percent; its lowest level for fifty years. And yet…
I used to think that Australians were alot like Americans given our similar pasts. Now I'm just wondering if we are too far gone as well. What's worse is that I believe the pathogen spread from here to there. We should have been more vigilant. Strange that they appear to be further gone than we are now.
