I am not arguing that a verbal promise by a U.S. President is meaningless. What I am saying is that it is just his personal promise of his Administration, and is understood as as such unless it is subsequently ratified or otherwise implemented by Congress. When Obama leaned over to Medvedev and said "I can show more flexibility after the election", is that something that should have been binding on the U.S. government even if he had lost??
George H.W. Bush made that promise through Baker in a specific context. That's how it was understood by Gorby at the time - just read his own statements on it - and Bush kept his word.
It is the attempt to convert that promise to the status of a super-treaty that can never be abrogated that is messed up.
It's not like formal treaties and other written agreements between the U.S. and the Soviet Union were unknown. Both sides knew exactly how to do that when they intended to make a more permanent agreement. The fact that they didn't do that here means that your assumption this was intended as a permanent agreement is simply wrong.

Nobody is “coming out of the woodwork”, because NATO expansion has been generally popular for a long time. That’s different from those who only now suddenly support the idea that a President can bind the entire country in perpetuity with a verbal promise.

A nation does need a shared language and culture. But there is a lot of room for variation.
It would be one of the worst scenarios if this nation had a singular culture. We need some things in common but not everything.
This nation began with lots of people who had some important things in common, but with many differences between them. The common ground gave us this nation, with a tiered structure of power. Federal, state, local.
Among the bedrock principles incorporated into the founding documents were freedom of association and the support of community values. This is how diversity can be beneficial.

The US does not need to prove stomach for engaging in armed conflict. We have been doing it since the end of WWII. We have spread a lot of death and destruction. The only thing we haven’t done is actually establish permanent control on the ground. In this last we have been beaten back every....single...bloody....time.
We did our supply chain eff-up to ourselves. It’s one of those things we never should have gotten into in the frist place - like Ukraine.
2) Supply chain issues are caused by China, not Russia, and if they wanted to screw with us, they could do it regardless of what was happening in Ukraine.
So I'd rather they know ahead of time that the West won't fold like a cheap suit of they start getting aggressive.
