White Death. The very mention of those two words was enough to strike fear into the hearts of Red Army soldiers who crossed the Soviet Union’s border with Finland during the Winter War of 1939, a brief but brutal conflict that stained the frosted pine forests with the blood of 200,000 Russians.
For this was the alias of Simo Hayha, one of the most prolific marksmen in military history.
Shrouded in the white, hooded snowsuit that gave him his sinister soubriquet, this ace Finnish sniper, who had honed his craft by hunting animals in the woods where he was raised, would crouch in crevices, or holes he dug in the thick snow. That he was just 5 ft 2 in tall made it easier for him to hide.

Well, it’s the Daily Mail, so it must be true!
The modern day editorializing aside, Simo Hayha is a well known historical figure during the winter war.

Used a Mosin and preferred iron sights... did not like the glint of a scope since it could give him away.
One of my favorite Olympic sports is the Biathlon. The Finns always seem to do well
The Mosin Simo used had been re-barreled by Tikka. That certainly helped it’s accuracy.

Simo Hayha was legitimately a legendary sniper.
Not only can they shoot, the Finns make some damned good rifles, too.
Tabloid Strategery. That’s how you do it.
YES! Go warmongers! Screw the Chinese and Taiwan and our supply chain. Let’s rearm in NATO and use our money to beef up this tired old bureaucratic relic. Make 1984 style globalism real, step by little useless step. But the grand gesture. That is what counts here.
I think with Ukraine we have hit max Daily Mail.
With IR and other Russian capabilities, it will be more like Snake Island for the Finns if they try igniting a war with Russia.
Ping.
Always amazed me that he didn’t want to use a scope because it might give him away, but used a Mosin which produces a huge fireball.
So you honestly think it’s Finland that wants to provoke a war with Russia, instead of the other way around?
Great story.
The Finns were able to prevail against the Soviets in the winter and had to surrender territory in the spring. Snow is their natural element and the Russians of that day could not handle it. Come the Thaw and the Russians prevailed by reasons of numbers and the Finns no longer blended into the environment.
“So you honestly think it’s Finland that wants to provoke a war with Russia, instead of the other way around?”
Finland certainly doesn’t need or want a war on their soil, but then neither did Ukraine, until Zelensky was told he had no choice.
Some red pilling of the Baltic Chihuahuas….
1721, Treaty of Nystad
Russia paid Sweden some reparations and returned Finland to them. But all Baltics became Russia from then on. So basically Russia fought for and won, and bought the Baltics for 56 tons of silver.
Baltics owe money to Russia for their independence since 1991
Finland wants war because the leadership is suffering from Mass Formation Psychosis courtesy of the CIA and Mockingbird media.
Here in the USA the Biden administration is trying to disarm everyone.
