Exactly why I picked AZ over TX.
“Individual cities can decide to implement local property tax limitations”
Counties assess properties.
The proper terminology is “property tax-gouging.”
Thanks.
Its an arduous task fraught with hurdles. But doing it or not, one is sure to learn quite a bit about the lies we have lived our entire lives. Doing it right could take years. However there is a process being discussed now in various circles, and I believe it will become more of a force for good
I imagine if something like Prop 13 were enacted today it would be found unconstitutional by the Cali supreme court and kicked to the curb like Props 182 and 8.
A plebiscite isn’t “mob rule.” It’s direct democracy. I’m not saying that the process is always perfect. It’s not. The voters can and have been hoodwinked. And the voters’ will can be and has been thwarted by the powers that be (e.g., CA voters’ rejection of gay marriage with Prop 8). But if you don’t understand why CA’s Prop 13 is a good thing, and why its continued existence been supported by every conservative in the state for the last 40 years, there’s nothing I can do to help you.
Our friends over in Jeff Davis Parish, Louisiana had their’s almost double last December. He couldn’t believe it. He call the tax assessor’s office to see if maybe there was some kind of mistake. Nope. They had gone and re-assessed everyone’s property...thus the increase.
And if you wanna find out who REALLY owns your property, rest assured, you’ll quickly find out if you don’t pay em.
Somewhere, somehow...this has got to come to an end.
It’s unsustainable the way it is.
The middle-class working man, just trying to raise his family and live in peace is being taxed out of existence by these greedy govt. bassturds.
I am also in Cochise Co. My assessment went up 11%. I am appealing because this is in direct conflict of State Statute 42-13301. Residential property tax cannot exceed 5% per year.
But I agree that more people are moving in. Lots more. At my work, I meet a lot of people who are moving in and developing property.
This varies by state.
In CT the counties have no taxing authority—only cities and towns do.
Because cities and counties have little control over prop tax they often go begging to the state and end up running via state mandates.
Because of the deal biz gets on lower prop tax they don't fight hard enough against other impositions by the state such as increased fees and regulations.
Prop 13 is not a win-win. Being able to die in the home you purchased decades ago is not a human right I am aware of. Many people used to retire out of state.
florida... ๐
I’m sorry. But at this point in history, anyone who advocates higher taxes in any form — whether on property, income, inheritance, capital gains, whatever — is the friend of big-government liberalism and the enemy of small-government conservatism. Pick a lane, buddy.
I sold my home in Illinois just a few weeks ago.
Not a huge place at all, 1700 sq ft
2750.00 a year tax
I’m on my farm now in Missouri and this house is over 5000sq ft, has a huge barn, 40 acres, large greenhouse..etc
1032.00 a year tax
My farm is in the process of being sold and I am going to move into a small 2 bedroom house in a nearby MO town. 1100 sq ft in a nice area.
270.00 a year tax
Missouri has relatively low property tax.. especially on farms it seems.
One doesn’t own real estate, one only leases it from the government.
I was responding to Califoria.
I live here, but rent. I want to move to Arkansas.
Prop 13 has some wonky features when it comes to inheritances.
If a family gets the details right they can remain under Prop 13 for generation after generation.
For most people property taxes are collected with their mortgage payment - and their home owner’s insurance - all added in to the single payment. So it’s not a big deal.

Depends upon the amount of the increase. With all the
increases coming on most things we buy/use then it will
make a difference on money left for discretionary items.
