One would think that inflation would cause the markets to rise given that the dollar is losing purchasing power so quickly.

This is not caused by inflation directly. It's caused by the fact that we're in a largely self-inflicted recession. The market knows it. The media and the administration (but I repeat myself) are still playing pretend.
