She got goofy genes from both parents. Her mother stole from her own charity in order to supply herself with the opioid meds she got addicted to. She claimed she got hooked on them because of the Keating Five Scandal which occurred in 1989. In 1993, one of the health care workers at the clinic, who caught on to what she was doing, reported her to the FDA. She fired him, claiming it was because of the budget. The McCains wanted it all covered up, and didn't want her to face any punishment. In the end, her lawyer secured an agreement with the U.S. Attorney's office for her to undergo rehab, pay restitution, and do community service. Before the Federal prosecutor was able to release a statement on her case, Cindy McCain told her version of the story about her addiction to the press.
