~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Bragg, North Carolina

NCfortbragg1

Fort Bragg, North Carolina, is a military installation of the United States Army in North Carolina, and is one of the largest military installations in the world, with around 54,000 military personnel. It is located within Cumberland, Hoke, Harnett, and Moore counties and borders the towns of Fayetteville, Spring Lake, and Southern Pines.

It is named for native North Carolinian Confederate General Braxton Bragg, who had previously served in the United States Army in the Mexican-American War. Fort Bragg is one of ten United States Army installations named for officers who led military units of the Confederacy in the American Civil War.

Fort Bragg covers over 251 square miles. It is the home of the Army's XVIII Airborne Corps and is the headquarters of the United States Army Special Operations Command, which oversees the U.S. Army 1st Special Forces Command (Airborne) and 75th Ranger Regiment. It is also home to the U.S. Army Forces Command, U.S. Army Reserve Command, and Womack Army Medical Center.

Fort Bragg maintains two airfields: Pope Field, where the United States Air Force stations global airlift and special operations assets as well as the Air Force Combat Control School, and Simmons Army Airfield, where Army aviation units support the needs of airborne and special operations forces on post.

NCfortbragg4

XVIII Airborne Corps rapidly deploys ready Army forces anywhere in the world by air, land or sea, entering forcibly if necessary, to shape, deter, fight and win. The Corps headquarters provides mission command as an Army, Joint or Combined Task Force headquarters.

The XVIII Airborne Corps is “America’s Contingency Corps” and Fort Bragg is the home of the Army’s Airborne and Special Operations Forces.

NCfortbragg3

The 1st Special Forces Command (Airborne) is a division-level special operations forces command within the United States Army Special Operations Command. The command was first established in 1989 and reorganized in 2014 grouping together the Army Special Forces, psychological operations, civil affairs, and support troops into a single organization operating out of its headquarters at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

The mission of 1SFC (A) is to organize, equip, train, and validate forces to conduct full-spectrum special operations in support of United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), Geographic Combatant Commanders, American ambassadors, and other governmental agencies.

The new command includes all seven Special Forces groups (including the five active duty and two Army National Guard groups), two Psychological Operations groups, a civil affairs brigade, and a sustainment brigade. The Command has the ability to rapidly deploy a high-level headquarters to run sustained, unconventional campaigns in foreign theaters.

I don’t blame you for staying inside. Have you been putting some ice cubes in the kitties’ water dish to help them stay cool?

Today was pretty warm but not unbearable. The rest of the week is going to be toasty until Sunday, when the high is supposed to be only in the upper 70s. I hope we can get some rain with that cold front when it comes through Saturday because the corn’s getting mighty thirsty.

aireborne are short, presumably from hitting the ground so hard

I’ve checked their water, and because it’s in a metal dish and is in the shade, it hasn’t gotten that warm. It still feels room temp. I will do it if the humidity gets high and things don’t stay cool from evaporation.

Good that their water is staying relatively cool.
Even though our water dish was in the shade, the water would get pretty warm because it’s humid here. Ice cubes periodically kept it cool enough to help the cats cool off.
If it got really hot, I brought the cats inside. Heat stroke kills too many pets around here and it infuriates me that pet owners care so little.

THAT BRAIN DEAD MORON!!!

The reason that so many Southern Military installations are named after Southern Military leaders, and there are so many statues of Southern soldiers, Generals and privates alike was a specific strategy for reconciliation and reuniting the country. “With malice toward none with charity for all.”

That demented, lying, perverted criminal usurper has nothing but MALICE FOR ALL! HE IS MALICE! May he just...!!!

Ya shoulda moved. The tree couldn’t.

I told Radu last night that I saw my only full lunar eclipse under the most ideal atmospheric conditions possible...in the desert with absolutely no light pollution! And, of course, no trees.

Next time bring a chain saw...and a flashlight!

If I could get these cats inside, I would. But...there is no way. LOL! We are keeping water in the rain barrels and they’re a cool place to lay on or behind for cooling. The difference is striking.

Many Airborne Troopers ARE short. But they don’t realize it, if ever, until they’re well into their 60’s, or 70’s.

Remember, short Airborne Troopers are crack shots! And lousy
targets!

Wow! Now those were some mighty cool Knuckle Dragging Insensitive Neanderthals of the Training Group you had. A great surprise and I love how they pulled it off. LOL
What a neat memory they left y’all with.

You have a good setup for them to help get them through the heat and that counts for a lot. Some people don’t do anything and the poor pets suffer. Plenty of water and some shade go a long way to help.

It also helps that the air is so dry.
here, when temps are in the 90s and the humidity is in the 80 to 90% range, neither man nor beast can cool off easily.
I do my best to stay holed up inside. LOL

They are tough little things. They’ve survived at least 5 of our summers so far. Except for sweet Sugar and I hope she has a loving home. I still miss those blue eyes. :(

I stay in. The heat here “feels” cooler but the sun still sears your skin.

Yep, they’re tough but they’re well taken care of. If Li’l Bit hadn’t convinced you to take her in - and that took a while LOL - they probably wouldn’t be around today. Obviously no one else wanted her.

I hope Sugar is ok too. It broke my heart when she disappeared. She was so precious! My heart also broke when Ghost disappeared. I just loved that ol’ feller’s face.

They were both special to us and they'll always be missed. Li'l Bit was just Ghost's "guest" till she showed up with the kittens. She gave me no choice then. No way was I going to get rid of them OR have them produce multiple new litters. LOL! Here is a picture of when Ghost first brought Li'l Bit home to meet us. He was so proud. She still has the ratty collar that was too small around her neck. I cut it off right after that.

Ghost knew she needed a home and where a good one would be. :-) What a sweet pic of the two of them .... except for that ratty collar. What were they thinking when they put that on her?

I’m pretty sure it wasn’t ratty when they put it on her. it was pink woven, but it was way too small and I think she had shredded it trying to remove it by herself.

She was very grateful when I cut it off. She didn’t know me well, but she stood very still while I did it. She trusted me. That means a lot. She still trusts me. She’s here every single day waiting for me to care for her little self. I’d have her indoors in a heartbeat, but Ginger won’t have it. sigh

They really were something, huh? We were on a tight schedule, and they just took it upon themselves to set their priorities to “REAL LIFE”, ‘CAUSE THEY FIGURED WE SHOULD SEE THIS!

They didn’t make a big deal about it. They just did it...and gave us the rest of the day off to sleep (soldiers are real good at sleeping, anywhere, anytime, ten minutes, two days, it’s all the same. I actually saw a guy sleeping on his feet one time, in the middle of a platoon formation. You think anyone would wake him? Everyone just walked around him and left him there standing where he was and out like a light.

Those were remarkable men. Every Academic from the whole IV League combined isn’t worth one of them. One of these instructors joined the army at the age of 17, outta Tennessee. Got interested in Richard Wagner and his music, learned about it on his own over the years. In time he started corresponding with fellow Wagner lovers, then professors of music and history, then writing about what he thought about Wagner and his music and times, even mastered the German language so he could read Wagner’s work first hand, and after a dozen years or so was acknowledged worldwide as an authority on Richard Wagner. Wrote a few very well received books about him...all between tours of duty. Still spoke with a backwoods sense of humor and style.

A great guy! One of my chief mentors. ALL of them were great men, from the old school. It was an honor to be taught by such men! They were ALL real.
