Russian state television has said Moscow may deploy tactical nuclear weapons to its European borders if Finland and Sweden allow military bases on their territory after joining NATO.
Sweden's Social Democrats yesterday said they had dropped their opposition to NATO membership only hours after Finland confirmed its intention to join the alliance.
Pundits on Russian state TV responded: 'Their official reason is fear. But they'll have more fear in Nato. When Nato bases appear in Sweden & Finland, Russia will have no choice but to neutralise the imbalance & new threat by deploying tactical nuclear weapons.'
Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia's security council, said weeks ago that Russia could deploy nuclear weapons and hypersonic missiles in its Kaliningrad exclave between Poland and Lithuania, in responce to NATO's Nordic expansion.
One of the original supposed rationales for Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in February was to stop Nato enlargement - but that plan is now in tatters as both Scandinavian nations say they will seek membership of the alliance.
Stockholm’s formal application is expected to start later today after being debated and approved by MPs. Sweden, which was neutral during the Second World War, stayed out of military alliances for more than 200 years though it forged closer ties with the Brussels-based organisation from the 1990s.
The turnaround by prime minister Magdalena Andersson’s Social Democrat party, which has opposed Nato membership since the start of the alliance, secures a firm majority in Sweden’s parliament in favour of joining. Mrs Andersson said she would consult parliament today before announcing her government’s official intention to apply.
‘Europe, Sweden and the Swedish public are living a new and dangerous reality,' said Ms Andersson, announcing a decades-long policy U-turn. 'The best thing for the security of Sweden and the Swedish people is to join Nato.’

Ukraine wasn’t exactly in a position to refuse. But since regaining independence Ukraine was worked towards NATO status at various points, and was one of the first former Soviet countries to open formal relations with NATO and the very first to conclude a formal peace framework with NATO.
I wouldn’t trust the Daily Agenda.
I wonder if Russia’s nuclear weapons are as serviceable as their troops and other weapons are.
I could just imagine one of their nuclear weapons failing to get out of it’s silo before it explodes.

What happenes When Russia through some terrorist organization is it going to supply weapons to Paris that’s what they’re going to do what happens when they destroy the wind farms and solar box that your episode depended on how about the US same thing we’ve been letting people and not filtering them. And they have all these new people coming in and the fact of the matter is there’s no jobs there’s no food and there’s gonna be more people looking for what happens when they start saying well these people have all this food in their house. Not really. Kaliningrad’s entire west borders the Baltic Sea. In any event, it was Russia that insisted on Kaliningrad, which — corollary to being surrounded — is a dagger poised at the heart of NATO. And Kaliningrad is armed to the hilt.

Why not say “Cuba”? It would be easier to argue instead of the absurdity of Canada or Mexico.
All fallout travels from west to east. Study “ rainout”. Fallout causes rain, each rainfall reduces airborne particles…it is estimated if a nuke hit LA, depending on the jet stream, about a dozen rainouts would occur before it hits the east greatly reducing ( non lethal) the radiation…I won’t touch on Alpha, Beta, and Gamma radiation.
Our hundreds of nuke testing in Nevada was “ tolerable”, no danger advertised by .gov, but in fact studies today show many long term illnesses.No one dropping dead in the streets, but a much slower effect.
Bottom line, nuke war is very survivable, just look at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, thriving cities just a decade after the hit.
I recommend everyone take a look at the border of Estonia
and Latvia, and realize it’s closer than those other nations,
to the area Russia seems to be saying they are worried about.
They have been members of NATO since 2004.

It has attacked a neighbor nation twice. So far it hasn’t
made Russia more safe. That seems to be Putin’s favorite
saying these days, but doesn’t apply it to his own nation
and its actions and outcome.

I recall a post by a FReeper stating he was allowed to inspect a Russkie ICBM after the so-called fall of the Soviet Union and saw that it was rusted and poorly maintained. He was told by a Russkie that that particular missile hadn’t been operable for years.
That's what all our enemies want, which is a good sign that we should do the exact opposite.
