The Buffalo shooter threatened to shoot up his high school in 2021. That information never made it to the NICS background check database. The FFL that sold him the AR-15 had a clean NICS check. The shooter had been evaluated for mental illness after the threat. Background checks are no better than the databases that provide the information. This is another foul up like the shooter that attacked the Texas church. His peccadillos were never reported to NICS and he was likewise able to purchase are AR-15 for his activity.

The problem is violent, mentally ill individuals who never get reported to NICS. It is not the 99% of law abiding gun owners.
