Texas residents are being asked to conserve power after six power plants tripped offline.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which manages the majority of the state's power grid, wrote Friday that the incident resulted in the loss of approximately 2,900 megawatts of electricity.

It’s exactly why Greg Abbott should NOT be reelected
But of course he’s got more important social war issues to worry about
Ya, these “nukes” scare the hell out of me too. And I actually worked on both The STP and the comanche peak plants during construction in the late 80’s. I worked in the x ray labs ensuring the integrity of the reactor and cooling systems. The old designs were so complex added to the toxicity of the fuels is just asking for catastrophic failure. The new Thorium Salt Reactor designs are hundreds of times safer, the fuel is useless for making bombs, and most important to me, the half lives of the fuels are in the single to double digit years as opposed to thousands. just mothballing these old monstrosities is going to run into the high billions.
“If this helps the Ukraine war effort and/or Globull warming, I’m all for it!”
Power going out is the one thing that makes Beto governor. That’s why every threat of an outage, even when they don’t happen, is headline news here. Anything to remind people of the 2021 winter freeze/outage fiasco and take down Abbott.
I’m also a fan of molten salt reactors especially fast spectrum ones that can burn up the TRU elements. Samsung is working on a mobile sea based salt reactor but those could just as easily be floated on a lake or cooling pond.
One summer when off from college worked in industrial laundry that clean uniforms from nuclear power plants
Starting in May plant would shut down for refuel and maintainance
Big rush of uniforms ......
No doubt at all about that.
It would allow Texas to draw power from the other two grids in the event of an emergency. But that's not what Texas wants. They want their own grid, free from federal interference, and that's what they have.
Thank you, Robert-people who do not live in Texas don’t realize that the EPA has a saddle on ERCOT, rides it hard and puts it up wet every Summer since they have been in existence-the fed owns them, and has ever since Obama gave the EPA that ability over the protest and will of the gov and citizens of ALL states-not just Texas-also, he really hated Texas for not kissing his ass-probably still does-the feeling is mutual...
That said, there is always notice given to conserve starting in May or June depending on weather-has been since around 1995-if gov Abbott can get rid of ERCOT, we can call our own shots again-he tried a couple of years ago by forcing most of the members to resign or be removed-but the EPA screwed that up in the name of fed control-we really have to get rid of the EPA-it has WAY outlived any use it ever had-if we could do that, I’ll bet even Cali would have fewer utility emergencies/brownouts...
Obama gave the EPA most control over our grid with an advisory board-we’ve been trying to get out of that forced deal ever since-almost did it with Trump in office-if we get him or another repub in ‘24-or even overturn dems in senate and house this year, maybe EPA dismantling can start in every state-EPA is as useless as tits on a boar hog...
As soon as we can get rid of the EPA we’ve been saddled with, we will have our own grid autonomy again-before the fed/EPA butted in, we used to sell electricity/energy to Cali-Arizona sometimes, too-EPA put a stop to that by overruling it and limiting our production...
How could Obama do that when the independence of the Texas grid goes back a hundred years or more? Texas has been screwing up its own grid on its own. You have the electrical system you want.
Texas is importing nearly a gigawatt right now so there are ties to the other two interconnections and Mexico via Laredo and its rotary transformer one of the few AC/AC links in the world.
Here is the real time stats at the bottom is the DC ties and the variable frequency transformer in Laredo. Texas has to keep its power import under 10% of totals to keep its immunity to federal oversight.

DC Tie Flows
DC_E (East) -595
DC_L (Laredo VFT) 0
DC_N (North) -219
DC_R (Railroad) -90
DC_S (Eagle Pass) 0
You are mistaken-we have Obama-and to some extent-Clinton to thank for screwing it up-both of them empowered the EPA in all things relating to resources-including that mud hole and rain puddle-regulation of all the water-a plague on rural properties in all states-Trump was getting rid of that, too but now Biden let the EPA turn the screws again...
You don’t live in this state-many of us who do have kept up with the energy/grid/EPA issues since they became issues in the 1st place...
Ruh-oh-there you go making sense-we can’t have that...(s)
Seriously-thanks for posting that-many do not know how ruinous the fed is-oversight or not...
Thanks to both of you for your insight on these issues. I can be hard for those of us who don’t live in the state to understand the nuances of the power grid there.
I recall when there was that big outage last year, there was a lot of good information that reached many of us who were puzzled by it, and I I recall a portion of that came from one or both of you.
Pretty sure NOT TRUE.
They absolutely don’t screw around in Texas
*********
Oh yes they do, big time in some cases.
You are welcome any time...
Greenies don’t care about that, it the control they want.
