Ya, these “nukes” scare the hell out of me too. And I actually worked on both The STP and the comanche peak plants during construction in the late 80’s. I worked in the x ray labs ensuring the integrity of the reactor and cooling systems. The old designs were so complex added to the toxicity of the fuels is just asking for catastrophic failure.The new Thorium Salt Reactor designs are hundreds of times safer, the fuel is useless for making bombs, and most important to me, the half lives of the fuels are in the single to double digit years as opposed to thousands. just mothballing these old monstrosities is going to run into the high billions.

I’m also a fan of molten salt reactors especially fast spectrum ones that can burn up the TRU elements. Samsung is working on a mobile sea based salt reactor but those could just as easily be floated on a lake or cooling pond.
