A Chinese chemical engineer was sentenced to 14 years in prison for stealing trade secrets on drink can coatings to establish a Chinese company backed by the Chinese government.
Xiaorong “Shannon” You, 59, was sentenced on Monday by a federal judge in Greeneville, Tennessee, on the charges of conspiracy to commit trade secret theft, conspiracy to commit economic espionage, possession of stolen trade secrets, economic espionage and wire fraud. In addition, she is ordered to pay a $200,000 fine and serve three years of supervised release.
“Stealing technology isn’t just a crime against a company,” Acting Assistant Director Bradley S. Benavides of the FBI’s Counterintelligence Division said in a release. “It’s a crime against American workers whose jobs and livelihoods are impacted.” You stole valuable information related to bisphenol-A-free (BPA-free) coatings found inside beverage cans. BPA was used to help lessen flavor loss and prevent cans from corroding. Companies began developing BPA-free alternatives because of BPA’s potential health risks.

Buying their products and backwards engineering them, like Pepsi and Coke do to each other, is too much trouble?
If only it had been a Clinton lackey selling US military technology, it would be a slap on the wrist.
C.R. MacNamara: Schlemmer!! (Last line in movie as MacNamara finds a Pepsi-Cola in the Coke machine...)
Regards,
The question is how soon and how many innocent Americans will be arrested and tried as spies to exchange for this one?
only a
five-year-old
takes this at face value
Making BPA free can coatings, and BPA free baby bottles, is a scam brought on by liberal lawyers . There greed costs US consumers Billions.
I refuse to believe Asians are way smarter than Americans as long as China keeps having to steal 1/4 to 1/2 trillion $’s of intellectual property from us each year, even though they literally have 4 to 5 times as many brains as we do.
Chinese = all Asians? Showing your ignorance.
1.2 million trade secret=200,000$ fine.
Sounds fair.
I remember this case from a couple of years ago. The answer to your question is no. It doesn’t have to be military Secrets nor high-tech secrets. There is no segment of American industry where the Chinese have not attempted to steal their way to manufacturing or technological parity. As illustrated by this case, whether found guilty or innocent or never even prosecuted, these are one hundred to one or three hundred to one payoff bets.
Don’t be woke.
NO!! American companies and institutions are too damn STUPID and CHEAP to see the writing on the wall. CCP OWNS all their citizens all over the world. A country full of spies, thieves, and murderers. These people spy because their family in China is under threat.
F J Brandon left 81 B dollars worth of USGovernment trade secrets in Iraq.
What’s his sentence?
I am a sucker for rhetorical questions…No.
But at least The Krabby Patty Formula is safe!
Since the dollar amount stated was 120 million, I assume you meant 1.2 billion, not million, and yes, fine not strong enough. 🙂
China does represent over 1/4th of Asia’s population, does it not?
So, anyone think this Chinese person is now in China??
